As per the post, I think it is recgonised that Defs have weak rear door hinges when the rear wheel is mounted. As per another thread, and with a view to using a spare wheel mounted ski rack, I have been c0nsidering a Mantec swing away carrier to ease the burden. However for the same money, yet a lot easier to fit, I do wonder whether billet aluminum hing replacement might be the way to go. Does anyone have an experience or any thoughts about whether or not they make the door stronger and more stable or merely that they prevent rust and perhaps look better? Monsieur Le Grenadier

The hinges are not the weakest point, it is the door frame it self that is the problem. All the weight from a heavy spare wheel is hanging from a weak door frame. It will crack, it is not the question wether it will but when it will crack...
So best advise is get a spare wheel carier - especially if you want to hang other stuff like skis or bikes on the wheel (carrier).... best investment for the rear of your def is a swingaway carrier bolted to chassis member and using original door fixing points to pivot your wheel but not take any loading....just fitted one to my 2010 def 90 which had the spare on the roofrack when I bought it...now have rack I can use and a sturdy spare wheel to stand on to load up...added plus is the door now stays open on sloping ground instead of chopping my legs off...win win.....

Has anyone had issues with their swing away wheel carrier lining up properly with the hinges on their door ?
Mine pulls up when it's opened - stretching the hinges open upwards against their internal Spring. Not sure what I can do about it? Last edited by Anderzander on 4th Jun 2016 4:55pm. Edited 1 time in total |

To be fair in my experience it's more of an issue on the older welded steel frame and aluminium clad doors. The later pressed steel doors are somewhat stiffer and more rigid. Trouble comes when badly adjusted doors with spare wheels mounted on them are allowed to rattle about while in motion plus those gorilla types who insist on repeatedly and aggressively slamming the door shut.
