Poll Question
MY07, 185K kilometers, Good engine, tight no leaks. EGR makes a loud embarrassing, chukka chukka noise now when turning off. I have unplugged it and it runs fine but I can't go on forever like this. Inspection next January.

If that's your original EGR you're doing well.
Given it's a faff of a job, I'd replace it then get it electronically disabled and blanked.

Why bother replacing it? Just get a BAS remap which will disable it anyway.

If it's dodgy before the remap then it won't necessarily shut properly and might still cause issues. My Alive EGR disable still has it do the clean cycle so it sounds normal, it just doesn't function whilst driving.

You don't have to get a remap to get the EGR system disabled and when I was looking Alive were much cheaper than BAS for an EGR valve shutoff.
