Screwed up whilst screwing in, now can't screw out!
Admittedly, always a problem!

Replaced headlamp bulbs just fine and rushed screwing in the final screw for the lamp guard and realised too late that I'd cross-threated it. The rivnut was also rotating and I'm now stuck half-in and half-out. There's a few lessons in there, but in the meantime...

I'm assuming I'm best to get a rivnut tool and refix a new rivnut, but how to recover the current bolt and rivnut? Time for mini-hacksaw and pull the bolt and rivnut through into the engine bay, or use mole grips to try and hold the rivnut, unscrew the bolt then replace the rivnut?

A quick search of posts shows that Memfast have a good tool and to get: M4; M5; M6; and M8 fixings - any thoughts (other than scathing remarks for amateur moment!)?

Mole grips on the back, get the screw out, retighten existing rivnut, halfords have cheap riv nut tools that will do. Original Member Pie n Pea Club.

Hold the back of the rivnut with pliers - not too tight or you risk distorting it, unsrew bolt, gently retap with 2nd taper tap, then either reset with tool, or 3 flat washers and a new bolt with grease, hold back of rivnut and reset with spanner.

Good luck!

Yes, don't squeeze the rivnut too tight or it will clamp onto the bolt even tighter. Steve.
