OK i know how much we all like a good sound proofing thread! so though i would start my own
95 110 300 tdi. rattle bangs squeaks noisy engine!! need to make it a bit it more user friendly. the bulkhead has foam matting and the seat box also has same foam matting, thats it!! so plan is stage 1 deadening, using silent coat deadener. stage 2 CSF bonded to Mass loaded vinyl this is the noise blocker!! stage 3 sound absorption ( not sure what i will use yet). This is gonna be done over next few month so nothing instant here! so far ive purchased 1 bulk pack of silent coat 2mm sound deadener mat 40 sheets £87 4 sheets of MLV £60 so today i stripped front section of cabin Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge gone for 98% coverage, making sure i did not cover any screws or nuts & bolts in case i ever have to take apart!. Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge took best part of the day to strip, fit and re install. verdict no major difference!!! will be adding more tomorrow! My 109 thread my youtube channel |

i only went out for a 10 min run but there wasnt much difference. but im sure there was SOME difference!! it is only first Quarter done though! im sure once the 2nd row, boot, utiltiy sides, and roof are done there will be a better improvement. also got doors to do at some stage too!.
the biggest change should be when i add MLV and CCF !! My 109 thread my youtube channel |

The biggest difference to my Td5 Station Wagon was when I put some neoprene foam matting in the 2nd row seat area. I find it quite amusing when I look inside friends' 110's especially the County models with that funny stuff called carpet! Mine is a bog standard bottom of the range one but the front of mine has the foam soundproofing from the factory with the rubber matting on top. All the seat box on mine is covered with foam and matting where the County models have bare seatboxes under the seats! The amount of road noise that was deadened when I covered the 2nd row are was unbelievable, that plus the load area on mine being ply lined and full of junk makes mine quite bearable

Silent coat/dynamat etc does not stop noise! It stops rattles and vibration. This is why you only really need to put it in the centre of panels, but I did the whole floor of the defender and will be doing the roof when I have time because I like to do things belt and braces. The closed cell foam and mass loaded vinyl should make the most difference.

yea i had fully expected to not use SC at 100% but the bare panels on a defender are so poor it kind of needs it!! in fact i added extra 50% to the 2 floor panels !! My 109 thread

I did mine with silent coat (TD5 CSW) and found putting two layers of SC so 4 mm round the tunnel and bulkhead made quite a difference. As has been said, the flat panels need to be stopped drumming and then the sound absorbing stuff added.n

yea think i might be putting another 2mm in strategic places. even with 100 % coverage the some panels still aren't effectively dampened! My 109 thread

I found most of the noise came through my (plastic, TD5) Gearbox cover.
The noise went down drastically after I covered it in closed cell foam, MLV and carpet. |

Bought another pack of silent coat, 20 sheets, £44.
got side panel done with extra 2 sheets on to make it 4 mm in places as its a very resonatey (is that even a word?)panel. nice thud to it now! also got majority of floor done and finished off the nearside wheel box. Click image to enlarge My 109 thread my youtube channel |

you seem to be doing a bit of that......but I do love a good sound proofing tread. seriously I think you'll get there perhaps dropping it 5db overall after you have spent hundreds on trying. Had a mate who bought some pre moulded 6mm thick rubber seat box, gear box tunnel, and floor mats. Cost him 600 odd quid, results were hardly noticeable. At least he was honest. But I'm with you brother, I have a dirty ol Tdi here here I'm doing up, and to think it could possibly roll out without some attempt of making it quieter is ridiculous. My Defender and travels |

Biggest problem with a Tdi is engine noise I find. A 300 is slightly more refined than a 200 but it's still a noisy clattery old thing. The exhaust can resonate as well causing a booming in the back.
My 90 has a layer of FatMat Rattletrap (a dampener like Dynamat) across the whole bulkhead under the dash etc. and the foot wells, floors, transmission tunnel, seat box and rear floor. The upper rear panels have flashing tape because I ran out of FatMat! On top of the aforementioned I have the standard Land Rover CSW footwell/tunnel trim pieces (a dense foam kind of material) and then the standard carpets on top of that. In the back I have just put carpet on top of the base layer. It might benefit from some foam etc. in the back but as I mention above my main bug bear now is engine noise. At higher speeds (60mph) it is still a little loud for my liking - though markedly improved from before. Talking is now possible on the motorway for example, and anyone who's driven one will know that this is not usually the case for the farmer-spec Tdi! I am considering one of those lead-sandwich engine blankets which drops down the back of the block and blocks the noise from heading towards the cabin. |
