What's the old adage? "All the gear but no idea".

Hard to have sympathy I'm afraid: if you don't know what you're doing, don't do it.

An expensive lesson, but at least no-one was injured.

TBH, this is a very good warning to all "hero,4x4 owners".Moron car drivers AND their spectators WILL expect you to quickly and without any damage what so ever, easily rescue their car out of a 5ft deep, water logged ditch, in the snow, expect verbal abuse when you say "no",expect to be held responsible when your "failed" actions cause damage resulting in YOU paying for all costs..The exact same reason I say NO to EVERYONE stuck in a ditch.Remember, no good dead goes unpunished!!You are NOT trained or insured for for vehicle recovery, but YOU are ALWAYS responsible!! Pov.spec,ftw. 2006, 110,TD5.
