Hi Guys,
I want to fit my rear access ladder permanently as I don't like the idea of having to unbolt and re-bolt it every time I want to use the roof rack. Problem is, when fitted on the passenger side it partially blocks the number plate which is not so good. I can fit it on the other side but this will require a modification to the mounting slots in the ladder. What do we think? Can't say I've ever heard of anyone having issues with the authorities and the ladder obscuring the number plate, but you obviously have a doubt otherwise you'd just fit it to the other side.
All depends how big a modification is needed to the ladder to get it fit 2007 - Stornoway Grey 90 XS SW - Gone 2002 - Black Discovery II - Gone 2014 - Montalcino Red 110 XS SW |

If you were worried you could weld in a loop around the number plate?

Or just move the number plate to the other side?

Thanks guys for all the replies.
As it will only need a slot cutting in the mounting bracket I think I will just put it on the drivers side and then forget about it. Running Restoration Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/post323197.html#323197 Self confessed mileage hunter |

Don't forget though, if lifting items onto and off the rack whilst partially on the ladder, if you are right handed that will be a pig, and I think hence why ladders are more commonly on the left? If you are a leftie though, then its a bonus. North Cumbria Search and Rescue - Team Leader

I think it's 'cos if they were on the right the door-mounted spare wheel would bash into them! But I had a Brownchurch roof rack/ladder which partially obscured the number plate, never had a problem with MOTs Peter |

i think they are generally on the left so you can use them with the rear door open DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS,

Spare wheel will foul if ladder is on right side. Regs are quite ambiguous and I think just says plate must be visible from the rear. Yours is.

Ladder may also foul the door if on the offside.
