I get this from time to time an assume it's the viscous fan engaging. Why it engages when cold alludes me 2007 - Stornoway Grey 90 XS SW - Gone

my td5 defender and tdv6 disco both make a sound like you describe. I think it's the viscous fan and comes from parking it up with the fan engaged.
I can recreate it by removing and refitting the fan as the 1st start up it is engaged and makes the funny sound for a short while. I think spinning g the fan by hand also engages it as I had it happen after inspecting the fan blades after pulling a stick out from green laning 2014 - current ..... 2003 defender td5 90 (my car) 2009 - current .... 2005 zx10r |

From the above link...
"My fan clutch makes a loud noise when started cold. Is this normal?" Yes, most fan clutches allow the fluid to drain into the working area when shut down and engage the clutch. At starts it may take 1-2 minutes for the clutch to slow down. Stupid phone would not let me edit the first post, grrr. Moved my post count along though. Cheers, Kyle. |

Thanks for all the answers! I thought I was the only one with this phenomenon, but with Defenders, even the strange noises seem to be common
Will check the viscous fan when I go out the parking lot in a few minutes... Thanks! |

I usually don't worry until I hear the door gunners open up with the M60s.

It's solved!
The copper seal on one of the injectors was getting loose, and the injector started to bounce around. Glad we caught the in time! |
