If it's not illegal then he's done nothing wrong.
What he or anyone else does with their money is none of my business providing it isn't illegal, and no one deserves trial by tabloids or social media. The tax system is weird and complex but the blame cannot be fully laid on the current government. My dad was a tax accountant and at one point wrote to Gordon Brown saying words to the effect of "you do realise you've just opened up a really huge and rather stupid loophole don't you?", got a reply saying "so what?" then a snotty letter some time later saying "you sod why are you using such and such a loophole". At the end of the day my dad wouldn't have been doing his job properly had he not fully used the tax law. That's what people paid him to do. Incentives, let outs etc. are put in for a reason, and I don't think there's anything dubious about using them. There may have been something dubious about how the rules came about but that's not what's being discussed here. |

I do wonder if those in the media who are crying foul are only doing so because they haven't worked out how to use the system themselves and are annoyed because they could have been saving their own money instead of pouring it into the treasury? Either that or its a case of "look at him instead of what I'm doing." Rhubarb and custard let fly with their secret weapon.

I have a little bit of sympathy for Cameron in this context as it was his father not him that used the then legal tax loophole to avoid paying tax ??????
To suggest he benefited from going to Eton with that money is daft , of course he did but what do you expect him to have done when he was at school ?To say " dad I don't think I should go to Eton because I am not sure where the money's come from" Some of the press are hell bent on divisive politics class vs class . The politics of envy. If any illegal activities have taken place then absolutely prosecute and confiscate assets. I agree that far more should be done to take people out of paying tax and £25k would be a good start. Tax credits are also a shameful waste and just the tax payer subsidising poor paying employers with the likes of Google and Amazon , Tesco etc paying minimum wage and the tax payer topping it up while the chief exec pockets a 6 figure salary. laughable tax policy. Jesus my dad was a car dealer I'm sure he used some pretty dubious practices selling cars should I be held responsible for the dubious behaviour of my father ?
Tax avoidance/planning has been going on since the tax system started its nothing new , the higher the tax the greater the need to do it ! Greedy bs have got rich by being greedy they are hardly going to pay tax unless they are made to. We need a simplyfied tax system, with two rates a basic rate of 20% up to £100k and then a higher rate of 40% over £100k. All your income if you live in the uk is taxed at the above rates. If you spend a % of your time in the UK then that same % should be taxed in the uk no matter where you make the income. The sooner we get a simple & fair system to both poor & rich the better. I do not see why if I earm £1m that I should give more than 40% to the tax man ! As for castigating the son with the follies of his father, I thought as a society we had got past that - rant over 2020 P300 HSE |

I think you have missed the point - read again nobody mentioned Cameron benefiting...just the sins of the father. It's not hard to find the stories - this one from 2012 - http://www.theguardian.com/politics/2012/a...tax-havens but if you want evidence this one states Cameron got £300k from his dad - long after he did leave Eton |

I think the problem lies with the wording of the statement and the fact that Tory peers and ex ministers are named yet a couple of years ago Mr Cameron said "You have to collect the taxes that are owed. That is only fair for companies and for people who play by the rules" and pledged to "fight the scourge of tax evasion" all the while knowing that his family are or have been involved in shady tax practices he is pledging to stamp out!!!
Just highlights of the lack of transparency and double standards we have come to expect of UK politicians!!! I read that , from the peice "Though entirely legal, the funds were set up in tax havens such as Panama City and Geneva, and explicitly boasted of their ability to remain outside UK tax jurisdiction. At the time of his death in late 2010, Ian Cameron left a fortune of £2.74m in his will, from which David Cameron received the sum of £300,000." Not sure I have missed the point. It was an inheritance after his father died. HR064 Hampshire and Berkshire 4x4 Response |

If I had a truck load of dosh, would definitely look at getting the best returns I could, even if involved offshore then so be it, trying to make the most of what you have is a good thing. As long as it's legal, nobody gets hurt, fill your boots, as it's all peanuts compared with international corporates taxation. Jumped ship to reliability - Mitsubishi L200
