oil in the ecu
My td5 defender broke down in france. The problem is oil in the ecu. I was given a quote of 1,400 euros to fix. The largest part of the cost is due tto the engine harness ( 585 euro as it is landrover genuine part). + labour. The injector harness is less expensive and easier to replace. My question... can I get away with just changing the injector harness and just clean the engine harness (loom). Thank in advance !!

Yes.

Oil will continue to drain through the main harness into the ECU for a short while, but it will only become a problem when it reaches the multiplug.

Don't pay 1400 euros for a 30 euro part and an hour with a spanner and some solvent cleaner....

This is for a Disco but the oily bits are the same for the defender;

This subject was comprehensively discussed very recently in this thread:-

One thing to note is that the oil leaks down the insides of the conductors and it will keep doing it unless you seal the connector in the new injector harness.

I've seen oil contamination inside the ECU box too. It might be worth opening that up to check while you're there.

Thanks for the advice and the links. I am going to change the injector harness only and not the engine harmess. Apparently there was oil in the
ecu according to the mechanic (I thought opening the ecu is not a good idea). I will let you know how it goes

You can open de ecu, but the top is tin and glued to the base.
I changed the both the looms as I didn't have to pay for the looms. Whistle But it is some work to change them but it is not difficult.

In your case I would change the injector loom and open the ecu. (if it is already broken you can't damage much) Whistle See if there is any oil in it and if so clean it. Clean the other connectors and see if it will be running fine. Roel
