I have no issue with travelers, but I do with thieving scumbags. Unfortunately some of the latter seem to follow the former around, and the local thieving scumbags all pop out of the woodwork when the travelers appear.

We have an RC shrine nearby in Walsingham that has a load of pilgrims every year. Most groups are a complete pain in the backside (like they close the road between my house and my girfriend's house, although they don't close the UCRs so you can keep popping up behind the road closed signs much to their irritation) but when the group with flashy caravans and distinctive accents appear the crime rate goes through the roof. You get swarms of white vans tootling round all the farms in the area offering second hand generators, welders, pressure washers,... asking to take your batteries, scrap, wife, chainsaw...

Thumbs Up

Where I grew up, the Travellers wouldn't dare to enter, and I suspect that ISIS or whatever they choose to call themselves (can't think of a decent acronym for murdering pieces of excrement) wouldn't have survived.

Alas as I've 'grown up' and chosen to live 'somewhere nice' these minor distractions and disruptions to 'normal life' are amplified to an extent. I'm talking about the arrival of Travellers, not ISIS.

Rightly or wrongly, I'm in lock-down mode.

I couldn't possibly comment on the feelings and perceptions noted above but in this PC world I do wonder if some of the comments above should be censored as I feel some are being out right racist?

Look what happened to J Clarkson when he mentioned gypsies and thieves in the same sentence ! He ended up getting 'set up' so they could boot him off.

Whistle

and some of the suggestions about ISIS........ there's always going to be a minority of bad apples in each apple cart, and as such you shouldn't tar them all with the same brush. All they're trying to do is get some balance back in to their 'state'........

We have a traveller site about a mile or so from where we live, its been there for several years and as far as I know there hasn't been any issues apart from when there was a wedding on 2 years ago where hundreds of them descended on the local area. I have never seen so many new Mercs and other high end cars in one place. There was some trouble I believe in the local town so all the pubs and restaurants shut until they had moved on.

Sorry didn't mean to be racist in any way, shape or form.

Agree that Martin should consider censoring/removing if it causes offence.

I have been adversely affected by both of the parties mentioned in the past, so I'm a little scarred.

Apologies if I have caused any offence.

you've certainly not offended me - I was merely pointing out that in this day and age you have to be very careful what is said cos some numpty will jump and down with the PC card.

bring back the good ol days. I'm sure it wasn't like this just 30 years back. out of EU will be getting my vote if only we can lose one daft law it'll be a start.

Big Cry

ps. I share you're sentiments in terms of a possible elevated risk of theft.

I hope they soon move on and your pride and joy remains in tack - after all you've probably had to make sacrifices and work hard for it. what gives anyone the 'right' to think they can going messing with your stuff?

I am not implying that the do as you likey brigade are a bunch of thieving scum, however it is surely poor coincidence that when they holidayed on the South Downs near us

Fly tipping went through the roof
Two caravans disappeared when they did
Burglaries in the village went from none to nine in a week
An old lady got punched in the face for suggesting they ought to move on
Fires were set on the village common
The pubs banned everybody with an Irish accent due to several fights taking place outside after hours
My Defender got blocked in every night with the Freelander in front of it

We also have the odd hippy staying in the same car park, no trouble at all and they are lovely
Bit like ISIS, leave me alone and I like you. Start being a thieving git or murderous scum and I rapidly go off you and have a negative image, its not racism just how people react to others. I don't hate all travellers because they are travellers, I just hate a section of them when their life interferes with mine

I think I'll step down from this thread as I'm sure Martin has better things to do than keep an eye on what is and isn't said Bow down

a genuine sorry from me Martin - I appreciate you have to keep an eye on things and unfortunately I find this type of thing very emotive. Thumbs Up

don't think I've ever mentioned it before - great website and I take my hat off to you.

if you're ever in the area I'd welcome the opportunity to buy you a beer. Bow down
