engine block welded crack leaking ( 2,2 puma)
The engine block is fine leaking, I discovered a crack that was welded...It's the 2,2 engine with only 23,000 km.
I just bought the car for my summer house here and I knew it was a bit hunting abused but the welded crack really took me by surprised. I had take down the engine and talk to some old school welding local guys for repairing it but they told me it's tricky with the cast iron welding.
Any of you guys had any experience like this? Should I start looking for another engine block or can it be successfully re-welded ?

For what it's worth, the cylinder block is manufactured in Compacted Graphite Iron (CGI), so I don't know whether that would require a particular method and/or material.

Cylinder blocks are just not worth welding, it doesn't last.
Stapling is probably better but I wouldn't recommend that either.

Some years ago we have repaired hole in engine block of old diesel tractor engine with some "liquid metal". It is running still fine. The leak was just cooling water, not oil, not big pressure, engine block was cast iron.
Liquid metal is special "glue" for this types of repair. After 2 weeks outside, it was hard to find, where the patch was made. It was slightly rusty, same as the rest of engine. "Drobek" = The Small One - Discovery 2, "Blufínek" = The Blue Thing - Defender 130, and for me at least Ford Mondeo Smile

If it was an old obsolete engine out of a collectable classic then I would say have a go at repair but for a day to day modern vehicle that you need to be reliable and as Ford 2.2's are so common I would be looking to replace it. Steve.

Thank you guys. Here is impossible to find an engine block as the market is very limited. Land Rover Romania quoted it 7600 EUR ...I will try next week to see if it can be well re welded and if not I will start looking in UK for an used one. I am facing problems also with the chassis, so I will start looking for one also.

What would be the best website in UK for me to find an second hand 110 chassis and 2,2 block engine? ebay.uk? Or do you know a company dealing with this sort of parts? I would prefer an company as I will need an invoice and also shipping to be arrange. Thank you.

whats wrong with the chassis? surly cant be rotted out as it can only be a max of 4 years old. can it? richards or marsland chassis's for a new chassis. i would look into using a second hand chassis in your country as it maybe a big no no like here and would end you in hot water!

A couple of things,

To get the block properly metal stitched is very expensive, but works fine ( if you find a craftsman to do it )
I used to work in a engine shop, and only ever stitched stuff that couldn't be replaced,

For the quote of a new block, it would be cheaper to come over to the Landrover sort out at Newbury at the start of April and find one there ?
Hire a van and share the cost with a few friends ?

Who knows what else you may find ??

Yes, there is the Ford Transit with the Puma 2,2 but all the engines second hand available here are with very high mileage.

Regarding the chassis: we knew that it was hit but I was hoping I will get along with it. I have done the wheels alignment and it was ok. But then we took out the engine and we discovered that it was not well aligned and also the gear box now it's not centered as the chassis is bend.
So I decided to change the chassis and because anyway I pay the dismantling work I will also paint the car, soundproof, etc

I just sold a 30000mile euro5 rwd transit engine nd box for £1000 there available here all the time, I know the romainians take vans back to Romania to sell on as they are more expensive there why not come here buy a rwd transit drive it back nd take the engine out and sell the rest including your block to someone willing to put it together
