Oh my and oh dear...
Noticed the engine oil was a little low at the weekend, did not think much of it as I had to make tracks back to Anglesey. Pondering on it this week, the vehicle is usually not a drinker, i made time this evening to give the engine a good check over for new leaks etc. Nothing obvious from the outside, so dug a little deeper and pulled the turbo intake pipe off. Gave the compressor wheel a good wiggle and yeah there is more play than before, not much and certainly ok for a turbo that has done 160k miles. Checked the end float and Whhhooooaaaaa nelly, dink dink dink it went, in and out... Balls... I am pretty darned sure the end float is set to something like 0.08mm and there was certainly much more than that. So I looked a little deeper and there did not appear to be any obvious scouring on the external face of the vanes or compressor housing neither. As I turned the wheel and shined a light in to the housing a glint of fresh metal flashed from between two vanes. Yup I could see clear as day burrs of vane on the rear of the vane curling up in to the space between them... Time for a new turbo... And just in time too... I have photos which I will stick up later. The question is what should I replace it with? Standard GT20 or upgrade to VGT?? Is VGT really worth the expense? What are your experiences? And who did you buy yours from? For information my Defender is a 2002 with a IRB stage one remap, decat and de-egr. Standard intercooler and pipes. |

Good spot
are you happy with the way it currently drives ??? If so like for like replacement. A VVt potentially could give you lower end grunt, and would need Ian to tweak the tuning. To see any real gains you'd have to go bigger intercooler, and personally I'd go hybrid turbo then |

Right folks I have some photos and a video for you to see what I referred to in the first post. You can clearly see the play in the turbo and the little burr of metal on the vane as well.
Blooming lucky I think. Video: https://youtu.be/atct3NOGEx8 Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge |

Looks a bit like a particle of metal or stone or sonething like that hit it and deflected off it.
Who I'd be talking to about Turbo's if if I was in your shoes would be Gary @Alive. But that's just my humble opinion. |

Well it would appear that not many people actually want my hard earned today, so due to this being a time sensitive purchase I have had to go for a standard TD5 turbo as I can get it here for Tuesday. It is a pity I was looking forward to being tempted to put my hands a little deeper in to my pockets.
So, I have opted for a brand new standard Garrett turbo, gasgets, studs, nuts and errr on the side of caution and reliability instead of outright performance. I suspect I will however upgrade the intercooler and hoses shortly, the latter of which are getting a quite soft and spongey. No rocket ship for me this time around... |

To be fair, a decent tune on standard turbo with a larger cooler is plenty. I couldn't justify the extra ££'s required for a hybrid turbo and have said I would do it when the old one dies. It dose however put extra strain everywhere else as you cant help but use it The more you tune it, the more delicate it becomes

I ended up buying from Craddocks in the end. After much phoning around they were the only ones that could get all the parts to me by Tuesday. Euro car parts were definitely the fastest (could have had it this morning) for just the turbo, but would not supply the nuts and gaskets.
Having had an evening to think about this and in the cold light of day I think opting for the standard turbo was the right choice in the end. After all reliability means more to me than the number of horse tethered under the bonnet. It will be interesting to see how much better the engine goes with a fresh turbo. I wonder how many horses have escaped in the last 160k miles. I vividly remember how much better the old 200tdi went after a new turbo. A completely different animal. Just bought a fresh tin of WD40 to begin the soaking of the manifold bolts... |

Very true, that's why I've stuck with a Stage 1. So a good performance but not so much that it'll knacker everything else. |

Ideally you want a freshly skimed one and the modded stud kit to stop the warping, You get away with yours being skimmed new gasket and refit |
