Just saying hi and hoping to join the series club
I've been a LR owner for 16 years and a LR nut for 40 Mr. Green

The reason - I spent school holidays in Scotland visiting grandparents at the cottage they rented and most of this time in the back of a Series LR on the farm checking sheep and cattle. This involved river crossings, mud and lots of hill climbs Cool

When I left school and started my career my boss ferried me round in a series 2 for a year training me and it all came back although winter without a heater and rain dripping through the canvas roof may of been slightly unnerving after the sunny open top Farm days Laughing

So I've gone through FL1s, FL2s, D2s, RRSs and currently in a DS but what I've always wanted is a Series - I like the defender but seeing a series is way more inticing than a Ferrari or Porsche so I'm officially insane apparently Rolling Eyes

I've been member on Martins sites since 07 depending on which LR I had and dropped in here to do research but only just decided to join and post now - sorry it's been so long Embarassed

Anyway I waffle - the reason I'm here now is my big 50 this year and I've finally beaten swmbo into submission on the series. I'm allowed to spend some money on me for a change instead of handbags, shoes and coats for her Rolling Eyes

I'm capable of fitting towbars and electrics, building houses and restoring old buildings but probably not restoring a series so a project is out I think. I've looked on net and found some immaculate vehicles from dealers with I assume pretty good mark ups Confused

So knowing the type of person who frequents these forums I think my best bet is to give a home to a lovingly restored series by another LR nut. Over the years here I've learnt imho members know more than the dealers so I'm sure this is the best plan Bow down

I'm not looking to offroad it or use it as my daily runner. This is to be my Sunday toy, kept in the garage and lavished with tlc and hopefully passed on to my son. So am I mad or on the right track. Answers on a postcard to...

Seriously any information is greatly appreciated and I hope to be spending more time here researching and sharing the LR addiction Thumbs Up

So I've been doing more research and it appears S3 all have syncromesh, some late S2A may but S2 and S1 don't Question

I'd set my heart on a S2 but now unsure - I've never driven a vehicle without syncromesh and it sounds messy or am I overthinking it Confused

The Land Rover Centre Huddersfield are not far from me and have some nice examples so I'm wondering if anyone here has experience they can share please Mr. Green

I have to admit I feel like the new kid at school that nobody wants to talk too at the moment Embarassed Wanted a Series 2 LR since childhood but previously owned MY16 Disco Sport HSE TD4 Auto, MY13 RR Sport Black Edition TDV6 Auto, MY10 RR Sport HSE TDV6 Auto, 2007 Freelander 1 Freestyle TD4 Soft Top, 2009 Freelander 2 GS TD4 Auto, 2007 Freelander 2 GS TD4, 2004 Disco 2 Metropolis Auto, 2002 Disco 2 GS, 2000 Freelander 1 SE TD4 SW

All your points sound valid Thumbs Up

Driving without a syncromesh is a very different method of driving but like all things, the more you do it the better you get at it.

I cant really help on the series front as I have only ever had defenders but have driven series and I think for what you want from it your bang on the money.

I suppose the best bet would be to stick up a wanted advert in the for sale section and to keep your eyes pealed.

Best of luck Thumbs Up Running Restoration Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/post323197.html#323197

Hi
Why not have a look at the Series clubs on the web.
You will find it a better place to start looking, with vehicles changing hands through enthusiasts, not dealers making a quick buck with some old dog that's been blown over.
Be warned, there are plenty around like that!!

Make sure you know what your looking at, and research as much as possible.
Bodged chassis and bulkheads can be a real money pit.

Sounds like you need to see a few and decide what your after?
Later series are a tad more refined than the 1s and early 2s.
Don't be put off by a non Syncro box,it's all part of their charm. Wink

You will find that your budget will decide for you on what you want.
Genuine 1s are fetching big money now, and parts can be tricky to find.
2s are close behind. 3s still cheap ones about but they will steadily climb up in value.
Parts are plenty full and cheap for the s3.

Hope you get to find the one you want,
Look forward to seeing some photos very soon Thumbs Up 80" 80" 86" 88" 90"

Wanted, Forward Control Anything considered.

Cheers Ian Bow down

I prefer the look of the S2 and was scared off by the price of S1 Laughing

I live close to a big Series parts supplier and have got to know a local LR indi over the years so that should help keep it running

I'm fed up of losing shedloads of money on LRs so hoping this will combine investment with my hobby Mr. Green

I'm doing lot's of research and I can see it's a minefield which is why I joined here. Owners are the best source of information everytime Cool Wanted a Series 2 LR since childhood but previously owned MY16 Disco Sport HSE TD4 Auto, MY13 RR Sport Black Edition TDV6 Auto, MY10 RR Sport HSE TDV6 Auto, 2007 Freelander 1 Freestyle TD4 Soft Top, 2009 Freelander 2 GS TD4 Auto, 2007 Freelander 2 GS TD4, 2004 Disco 2 Metropolis Auto, 2002 Disco 2 GS, 2000 Freelander 1 SE TD4 SW

Series 2's are quite rare and consequently expensive, it's a 2a that you want (not easy to tell them apart anyway)

It's only first to second that doesn't have a synchromesh, the rest do Thumbs Up

I read that in my research and have visions of me sat at traffic light crunching gears with everyone looking and shaking their heads Laughing

Father in law says he learnt to drive in a "crash box" and owned pre select too but it's all gobbledygook to me - I learned to drive mid 80's and been spoiled. I went auto 2004 and rarely driven manual since Embarassed

Guess I need to drive one and decide but swaying towards S3 at moment Confused Wanted a Series 2 LR since childhood but previously owned MY16 Disco Sport HSE TD4 Auto, MY13 RR Sport Black Edition TDV6 Auto, MY10 RR Sport HSE TDV6 Auto, 2007 Freelander 1 Freestyle TD4 Soft Top, 2009 Freelander 2 GS TD4 Auto, 2007 Freelander 2 GS TD4, 2004 Disco 2 Metropolis Auto, 2002 Disco 2 GS, 2000 Freelander 1 SE TD4 SW

But annoyingly its the change from 1st to 2nd that normally needs to be swift, and double de-clutching isn't quick!

There's bags of character in some of the earlier coil sprung models too, don't discount them, just as much fun to fettle and your son will thank you for the increased comfort! 2016 D4 HSE

'Swift' isn't a term that can be used with a 2a Rolling with laughter

The whole idea of driving a Series is that you take life at a slower more simpler pace.

Double declutching is not hard, you soon get the hang of it.

Mastering a non-snchro box is remarkably easy and gives you techniques that are advantageous on all vehicles. Don't be put off by the lack of synchro.

Non-synchro boxes tend to be stronger, too.
