I don't trust the signs at the entrance.... I've worked in the building industry for several years and noticed how accurate people can be in this business. Wink Not that they are stupid but it's quite difficult to have everything under control. The ceiling and structural beams could be at the correct height, but when it comes to signs and lighting armatures, things could get more complicated.

I'd be surprised if these signs aren't spot on or actually have a degree of tolerance. If it wasn't the case you'd have a heap load of damages claims. A bit like speedometers, they always over read.

Can't remember where, but I read somewhere about a Defender who drove in a multi-story carpark, which went OK, but only after driving out to find there were obstructions on the ceiing just before the exit.
A lot of drivers behind him were not amused because he had to drive rearwards all the way back to the entrance... Shocked

With regards to the condition of tires, well, I guess I was lucky to try the measuring game early. When new (Federal Couragia MTs), you fit under 2.1m but you will have a tendency to duck every now and then especially in new garages where you do not really know the actual clearances. When older, you look like you have loads of clearance up top.

As for actual clearances, yes, some builders do not take into account pipe routings, vent ducting, lights, signs, etc sometimes as stated. Or, they may have actually started out proper but then had to repair and reapply flooring and went a bit too much.

Also, it's the rear you should be looking out for on stock trucks, I tried to slowly enter a garage with 1.9m clearance and the front went in fine but the very tip of the rear is what knicked the height barrier, good thing a guard was there and lifted the barrier so I could back out without dragging the barrier with me.

If the difference between overhead and truck is in mm, some guys say to just air down so you can go in then just air up later on upon going out. A bit of a hassle though.

Can't tell if you're being serious, but the full sequence is pull up to barrier, stop, open door, stand up and look above to check for clearance, then if happy get back in and drive slowly forwards!

Fortunately, it would take a fair whack to cause noticeable damage to the roof rack.

I was behind a triplet of women in a Range Rover some years ago, Bournemouth I seem to remember, entering a carpark. Two of the women exited said vehicle and lifted the black/yellow chequered height restricter so that the driver could pass underneath. Shocked

Barrier up they drove in, turned the corner and dispappeared into the carpark. We (I was with a handful of squaddies) got our ticket, went through the barrier, also turned into the carpark and drove to the end of the row to the first ramp only to find the RRS with its roof peeled back like a Sardine tin. Rolling with laughter

It took five of us sitting on the tail gate and reducing tyre pressure to lower the car enough to reverse out of the carpark and for her to wait for the recovery service, (or irate husband.... Whistle ). Wonders never cease. Thumbs Up

Can we have a bit of a height comparison - ideally in centimetres and measured unladen?

I'd be interested to know model and age, tyre sizes and pressures (and whether new or worn), and anything that would alter the height over a standard model?

I'll try and get around to checking mine later Thumbs Up

Without engaging in any significant construction work, I need to get mine below 205cm (about 6'8"). That'll require new garage doors but avoids structural alterations Smile

Mine is a 2011 SW, on 16" Blindos with Cooper ST Maxx. Unladen, no passengers, (can't speak for amount of fuel at time of last measurement) it sits at approx 205. Thumbs Up Monsieur Le Grenadier

Now that's a nice comfortable tolerance!

How does the rolling radius on your 285/65 18's compare with standard 235/85 16's? You can't have achieved 9cm less height just from a 2.5cm drop Smile
