Probably just what I'm used to but I find gearbox jacks a total and utter pain in the arse

Engine out sounds like a total pain in the arse compared to the alternative.
I once changed a clutch all from inside my naturally-aspirated 90. It was a miserable winter and I had no workshop so we removed the seatbox and floor and used a hi-lift jack shaft, sat on the dashboard and my equipment box in the back body to create a gantry, then used a small chain hoist to maneouver the LT77 and LT230 sufficiently to change the clutch. Bellhousing, slave cylinder, props and everything can be undone from inside. Didn't need to split the main box and transfer, didn't remove handbrake drum. It worked like a charm and involved very little lying on the floor. I don't know if there are any big differences between LT77 and R380 but it was nice and straightforward. At the garage I used to work at we always removed the main and transfer in one piece, but used an engine crane through the passenger side door. |
