As fitted to the wolf fleet for years, I always found them more of a pain than assisting me. 90 wolf - Jasmin http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic39408.html

Common on the sides, I'd just not seen any fitted to a swing away wheel carrier.

Swing away carriers are being retro fitted to the in service Wolf and Tithonus fleet, both hard and soft tops.
I'll do some digging to find out why. I concur with Mash, on a side mounted Wolf spare, they are a pain in the arse. Fitted after 2003 I think, I didn't have one on my government funded desert overland trip...... ![]() |

Quoted reason was "Code 1: to improve safety" and included in the package was "the conversion of a drop down tailgate to a side hinged tailgate and includes fitting a Swing Away Spare Wheel Carrier, the installation of a Spare Wheel Lifting Aid and the fitting of a Rear Step." Standard fit on all the green fleet here, views are very mixed as to the effectiveness.
I think it has to do with the safety elves and manual handling! |

"Government funded overland trip" - That's a cool way of looking at it lol. I have to admit that I drove many miles in wolfs when I was serving but never once had to take the spare wheel off the side. 4 tonners on the other hand.... that's a bitch to change lol

Mantec make this item http://www.firstfour.co.uk/item/2175242/ma...-defender-
I made my own with a nylon strap that I had in the shed and saved my £81. Took a bit of faff to get the length right, but it does make lifting and locating the wheel cleaner and easier if you are in decent clobber (on the way to the ballet, or the opera, for example ![]() |

Currently a holt on fitting the swing aways, apparently people with trailers have managed to crash into them so we can't fit them until it's been investigated. 90 wolf - Jasmin http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic39408.html
