Ahoy all petrol heads. Maybe not ahoy, unless we're discussing Powerboat Racing. But we're not, as the F1 season creeps slowly upon us.

Here's some news from Geneva that might spice up 2016.....thoughts?

I'm not sure it needed "spicing up" F1 is supposed to be the pinnacle of technical excellence, not an exercise in dumbing down to appeal to the masses.

I really don't care if people find it boring, I find football completely tedious but I don't expect the FA to start changing the rules to appeal to me and wouldn't expect them to. I know it's a monetary exercise but I wish they'd stop pratting about with the format to "improve the spectacle". So far the "improvements" have seen tyres that won't last more than 3 laps so the drivers spend most of the race conserving them, fuel limits so when the drivers aren't worrying about their tyres they're slowing down to conserve fuel and restrictions on in season testing that means that any team with a bad start to the season has pretty much no chance to catch up. We've even seen the tyre manufacturer determining what tyre pressures teams are allowed to run because the tyres are so flimsy that they explode if you run them too near the limit.

I'm not sure if these changes in the Q format will make much difference anyway, although it might iron out some of those odd Q sessions where the track is improving - it will prevent the slower teams from ousting a top vehicle due to track improvements near the end so Mercedes and Ferrari et al will be able to sit in the pits secure in the knowledge that most of those that might improve at the end are already eliminated so there aren't enough cars left running to topple them. http://www.yorkshireoffroadclub.net/

Looking forward to the new season, disappointed it's not on the BBC but at least it will be on Channel 4.

"Channel 4 coverage will begin over the weekend of March 18th-20th with build up to, and comprehensive highlights coverage of the 2016 Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix weekend. Channel 4’s first live race will be the 2016 Formula 1 Bahrain Grand Prix, broadcast over the weekend of 1st-3rd April...." Cheers Don.

Same here disappointed it's not on the BBC, but then I guess it's all down to cost and bean counters.

Qualifying by knocking out the slowest already happens, all they are doing is making everyone go out at the same point and race.
Probably the result will be more mistakes and crashes.
They need to race, that's what we want to see with over taking.

Next they will put speed cameras, once you get over 12 points you're out!!! 110XS CSW TD5.

I think they should dump all the rules and let it be the team who can build the best car that goes fastest wins so we can get some innovation into the sport again. Ray

In the interest of public motoring there should be a 45 gallon drum of petrol for each car for each race. Let them build whatever they like within a physical size and with obvious safety conditions.
Every year the race should be extended by 5 Kms without increasing the fuel allowance.
That way the enforced economies would help create efficient engines for road use.
F1 used to have a tight fuel allowance, why not bring it back?

Completely agree Ray...

All the so-called rules, introduced to liven it up, have done is succeeded in dumbing it down to the point where the best driver often doesn't win... Rolling Eyes

One of the most unfathomable, aside from clearly making money for the tyre manufacturer, is having to use two types of tyre, pointless... Twisted Evil

Using professional cycling as a rather far-fetched analogy; Tour de France riders are not forced to change tyres, for the sake of it, they race with what they have got and it is the best man/team that wins... Whistle

F1 should return to team racing with a car built within the race parameters and the best driver/team wins the race/championship... Thumbs Up

Assuming they can keep the car on track and the team can keep it running... Mr. Green
 Rog... Mr. Green
The GREEN One...

Letting them do whatever they want wouldn't work... look how it is at the moment, teams with huge R&D budgets control the sport, I'm sure to even get to a meeting (forget the name..) you have to be one of the top 4/5 teams?

so basically if you let them build whatever, its the team with the most money that would win..

in 2015

Red Bull Racing €468.7m
Mercedes €467.4m
McLaren Honda €465m
Ferrari €418m

then you have the likes of Manor at €83m...

Because the technical rules are now so tight, and the budgets of the teams so influential to results, I think gimmicks like this are actually needed to mix things up a little.

It's a shame it's come to this, but it's been getting increasingly more predictable and boring - I've followed for years, but started to tune out last season. Neutral

Ideally the season would be fought over by 3, 4 or even 5 teams/drivers, but for most of the last decade it's been a 1 or 2 horse race.

I think the idea that relaxing the technical rules would help is no longer true. The costs of this sport are so high compared to the old days, the richest team would still win.
Maybe if the technical rules were fixed for a number of years it would help, but I don't see that happening either with the push for greener tech & constant improvements in said tech, they want to force that upon teams.

This could be easily sorted by putting a cap on spending for any team entering then you have a level playing field and the smaller teams would know what to expect when starting up. Other than safety aspects it could be anything goes for x amount of pounds. Ray

I thought recent history has proven that when a team innovates in such a way that it maintains a dominant position for a season or more, it takes the spectacle out of the sport and turns people off.

What if teams could innovate then had to release the technical information to the other teams after one or two races so they had the opportunity to catch up?

That rather ignores what is becoming more common in the grand tours, of key riders jumping on and off different bikes at different times in a single stage?

They also have a wider choice of tyres to choose from - I don't even think there is a control set of tyres for them to choose from?

Yes a quandary, the top race teams in F1 do the most development which benefits everyone eventually, also the most boring form of sport ever, the most interesting competitive racing is done lower down in the "fixed" series.Where it really is driver skill.
So, your call, let the fashionistas (and their money) support the "top" series, who cares.Motorbike racing is where true motorsport is anyways Whistle . Pov.spec,ftw. 2006, 110,TD5.

Cycling (racing) tech hasn't really changed for 40 years,in fact cycling as a whole hasn't changed much for 100+years. Pov.spec,ftw. 2006, 110,TD5.
