Drive belt rattle when aircon on
Started a rattling noise when aircon compressor on. When the aircon compressor goes off, the rattle stops. I can see the rattle sound come from the drive belt adjuster, swinging rapidly. Only audiable when engine at idle. Any ideas.? Cheers.

Drive belt tensioner?
Update: replaced two idler pulleys due to worn bearing but the rattle is still present when engine at idle with aircon on. When the aircon is off no rattle. Aircon compressor also works alright. Drive belt looks OK too. The other option is to replace the drive belt tensioner P.No. PQG500210
Has anyone experienced similar problem.?

If you fix the problem definately to the tensioner it might be caused by the spring or the belt has an issue. If you don't mind, change the belt first and check the result. Faster and cheaper than the tensioner...

Hi Hornet, thanks for the advice. Is there anyway of checking the both tensioner and the belt either visually or physically for any faults? As you mentioned if its the tensioner then the faulty springs but if it's the drive belt what causes it to alter the size? I really don't want to end up buying both since they are not cheap in this part of the world. Cheers.

Difficult question. If the belt looks fine, no friction or damages, I don't think it lengthens. Whats your milage? There might be a chance that the bearing (Bearing type 6203) of the tensioner is worn, you could change this as a first step. Belt is halfprice of tensioner. Any chance of access to used parts?

My mileage is 63000mils. Drive belt was changed approx at 25000mils for aircon conversion. Checked the tensioner bearing also but seems nothing wrong with it. My local mechanic told me that he could find another used belt to try on. Still waiting for his response. Will update any progress. Cheers.

I did a short research. It *could" also be caused from a sticking freewheel of the generator. If you would like to test it, dismount the belt and use a screwdriver to turn the ventilator-wheel inside the generator in one direction and into the other. It only is allowed to freely turn in *one* direction! If you are not able to turn it clock- or counterclockwise , the freewheel needs to be replaced. Be careful not to damage anything inside the generator.

People who have this defect noticed a flutter of the tensioner while idle! It even should get stronger when you swich electrical consumers on. You can try this before doing the turning-test.

HTH!

Hi Hornet,
Today I did rotate and checked the ventilator of the alternator and it moved smoothly with no problem. So that concluded me to think the problem either with belt or the tensioner. Bought the "contitech continental" German made oem drive belt . Will fix this on Monday and hope this will resolve the rattle. Will update. Cheers.
