Sliding transfer box back on rods.
Hi all,
I've recently bought my first Defender (2008 - 90 HT) and have found my first oil leak. It seems to coming from the transfer box intermediate shaft o ring seal above the front output housing. I have read on this forum that it can be replaced by sliding the transfer box back on rods. Can any one tell me how this is done and what needs to be removed to do it.
Many thanks
Steve

Remove front and rear prop shafts, high/low linkage and diff lock linkage. Disconnect speedo drive and diff lock switch at transfer box. Remove handbrake drum and backplate. Remove all fixing bolts. There are two bolts which are threaded into gearbox extension housing, these are used for positioning the two longer studs or threaded rod through transfer box into extension housing. Drain transfer box oil. On the rear of the transfer box there is a large staked nut with a locking washer. This nut is on the intermediate shaft, unstake the nut and undo it noting its position. Pull the transfer box backwards sliding it on the threaded rod. Tap the end of the intermediate shaft towards the front of the t/box and it will move forward enough to gain access to the "O" ring. It is a fiddle but you can change it okay. Put sealant around the o ring and into the transfer box housing where it will mate together. Pull shaft back and secure with the nut, it is critical how tight this nut is done up hence why you need to note its original position. Push box back towards extension housing and secure. Fill oil and refit everything else. I don't think I've missed anything, I've seen a pictorial guide but can't seem to find it. Allow a couple of hours if laying on your back. You'll be able to see what you need to do. Good luck Thumbs Up I started with nothing and still have most of it left!
