hi Littlefoot,
To fit a rack, really depends on how strong you are, how many friends you can muster up and of course how heavy the rack is. the more people, the more careful you can be when fitting, depending on the type of feet on the rack, its probably best to put some soft material around them and lower the rack over the roof then one-by-one remove the protection box section racks are as strong as any, however alloy racks are more desirable, but which ever is fine as long as it fulfills your needs and you are happy with the looks. One thing to consider/remember is supermarket height barriers and underground car parks ... you'll be way over 2metres with a rack on. |

Thanks Bp,
So no one leaves any thin protective material as a shield to protect paint from the clamps once fitted? Incidently I found your prev answers on racks vs bars very usefull. Yep, since getting my 110 I give height restrictions a wide berth as shes 2.1+ as standard! |

I bought some rubber to protect the paint.
On mine, which is a Geniune LR basket rack. Like this one. (Similar to the G4 rack but different, don't know if it clamps the same?) The feet that sit in the gutter are curved steel. On these I put 3 layers of black sparky tape on the curve that touches the paint. (inside the gutter mind) The clamps that rap over the outer edge of the gutter have a harsher straight edge. I bought some rubber from ebay. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/220932277483 I used Sparky tape first and then the rubber over it. I also replaced the bolts that go through the clamps with SS ones. Happy now? |

I first put a piece of rubber in the gutter, then a piece of flat aluminum profile (to spread the load) and then the the roof rack feet on the profile. I have an aluminum Frontrunner 110 Expedition roofrack. Cheers, Vincent

Sounds like a very good idea, a small piece of flat rubber in the gutter first would help. Maybe a bit of inner tube. Gotta love the Dutch for practical thinking! Nou breekt mijn klomp! |

Dara
Send me a pic of the foot and clamps as I may have some rubber trim that might fit. I had a Hannibal rack that came with rubber trim to fit between rack and gutter. Just looked at link on Tigers post that's like trim that came with Hannibal rack. Simon |

when i fitted my rack i dipped the feet and clamps in plasticote (think thats how its spelt)
this gives a smooth plastic coating. the more coats the thicker the coating. i used black but loads of colour available. am sure it can be brushed on as well. been on 18 months now and still looks like it was done yesterday. excellent stuff. 110 xs s/wagon s3 swb soft top |

Cheers Steve for the tip about plasticote - sounds like an ideal long term solution but one for later i think.
Sounds like interesting stuff for a multitude of tasks too. Sounds like a plan Simon! "I love it when a plan comes together" |
