Hello All
I went into my local dealer today and parked up was the Land Rover offer and it set me thinking again about the replacement Defender... D should = Different / Distinctive... Please Land Rover... not a slightly more 'tougher / practical version' of the current design philosophy. I walked round a Range Rover Evoque and then a Discovery Sport, both 5 door, both within the same price bracket, (and both in metallic Grey) the Discovery was in essence the same design + around 10 %...it reminded me of BMW's design philosophy during the 90's the same car + 10% as you went 'up' through the range. Is Land Rover diluting the difference between its range... Click image to enlarge SKIP https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic83242.html |

I pick up a new Discovery Sport on Saturday that I've bought for Mrs FCX to replace her X5 that shes had for 11 years.
Test drove that and the Evoque, the DS is bigger and has 7 seats (HSE) |

Not driven the Freelander replacement, the wife has a 3 door dynamic Evoque, which I would think is more refined than a DS.
I did drive the Evoque to Cornwall last year and found it to be a very good vehicle. mse, the D4 is a top vehicle in my book, I don't envy your decision on a replacement Cheers Simon I can explain it to you, but I can't understand it for you 1990 110 TD5 county, my first Land Rover - gone 2012 Discovery 4 XS SDV6 - gone 2014 Discovery 4 XS SDV6 - gone 2015 Evoque SD4 dynamic - Wife’s - gone 2015 Urban Truck 90 XS Santorini Black Hard Top - Reluctantly gone 2020 Discovery 5 Eiger Grey 3.0 SE - gone March 24 2021 Defender S D250 Santorini Black 110 HT - gone March 24 2023 Evoque P300e SE wife’s current vehicle |

FL2 was based on the Focus chassis, which is also the basis for the RRE.
Disco S is the successor to the FL2, so yeah, all pretty much the same underneath -- 2010 Defender Puma 90 + BAS remap + Alive IC + Slickshift + Ashcroft ATB rear 2015 Range Rover Sport V8 Supercharged Defender Puma Workshop Manual: https://bit.ly/2zZ1en9 Discovery 4 Workshop Manual: https://bit.ly/2zXrtKO Range Rover/Sport L320/L322/L494 Workshop Manual: https://bit.ly/2zc58JQ |

I always think the Evoque look like someone at the factory has stepped on it to squash it down before it rolls of the production line
Lower the suspension on my RR Sport and people think I drive an Evoque 1998 90 50th Anniversary 4.0 V8 2016 90 Adventure 2015 Range Rover Sport 1971 Range Rover 2 Door Wife won't let me have any more...!!! |

IMHO, BOTH of these vehicles need the option of a more powerful, bigger displacement engine.

I'd prefer a Freelander 2.

Thanks, I'm toying with an out run disco, but I don't tend to do that and a sport is tempting but not that much...an fpace would be an option but they aren't out yet Mike |

We're up for a new car in the next month or two. Mrs Grenadier loves the Evoque, but I don't see the point in two big 4x4s. We have no kids, no dogs etc, and the 7-seater swallows friends who visit but don't fly-drive. I understand her wish for AWD, but given she is one of the most enthusiastic (and best) laydee drivers I know, I've suggested something of a sportier bent. She was uming and ahing over a Cayman (wish they did AWD) but being RWD it's not great on any days she has to travel solo (we normally drive to work together). So I'm looking at the new 2015 AudiTT 2.0l Fsi. Gorgeous interior, great MMI interface (fUll LED 8" dash) and lines that finally take it away from being a hairdressers car. Plus 230bhp straight out of the box. Will take it to a tuner and for £600 you can get the TTS performance out of the engine, 310bhp. Not bad given weight and size, and under 40 large, all in. so whilst Audi are not the most driver-minded cars, the apparently is vastly improved and offers Mrs Grenadier (me!) enough to make the twisties here a lot of fun. Might also get some ABT body kit on, make it a mini R8.

Tried both. Evoque is a "me" car and the Sport is a "we" car in other words if there are only you and partner then go for the Evoque but if you have kids then go for the Sport. My wife has the Evoque and I have the Defender - happiness!
My wife had the chipped TT and loved it but TTs do not like wet or icy roads which may be a problem for you Grenadier in the Alps! Jeff Ex 1968 Series 2A Ex 90 TD5 Ex D3 Ex D4 |

Good to hear Jeff. You'd be surprised how little rain we actually get here, outside of Nov. Far less than the UK. 10 days per month in Summer is average, but that includes days where there's a two-hour thunderstorm at the end of the day. So normally it's dry and what could be called 'perfect driving conditions'. Indeed super-heated 'soggy/slippy' tarmac is probably as much of an issue as the rain. Nov though is miserable, so most people head off.
However, interesting nonetheless. I'd be keen to know if your wife had the FWD or AWD version, also if it was the latest 2015 model? Apparently, (but I've not driven them side-by-side to know for sure), the latest 2015 model, based on the latest Golf Gti chassis is vastly improved, even over it's apparently similar forbearer. Hello Grenadier
No it was an older 2008 model, no AWD of FWD with a Revo 1 tune. Lovely car to drive and np problems with reliability over 7 years of ownership, not very practicable though so you need another car with some load carrying capacity! It took some gentle powers of persuasion to get her to move to the Evoque but she appreciates the benefits of the Evoque now! Jeff Ex 1968 Series 2A Ex 90 TD5 Ex D3 Ex D4 |

DS has different rear suspension. It uses a more compact multi link setup that gives it the room it needs for the +2 seats to fold down (which also allows the rear wheels to track the ground better off road, which is a bonus). Also worth noting it's marketed as a 5+2 not a 7 seat, unlike the full size Discovery. I'd go in the 3rd row for a lift home from the pub, wouldn't fancy anything over half an hour in there mind.
