Something you might find helpful is this page:
http://www.norfolk.gov.uk/leisure_and_cult.../index.htm I did some north of Thetford before Christmas, from sort of west of Mundford to a bit on the Peddar's Way at Wretham. Good day out. If you still have spaces then I might be able to join you but I'm out for lunch that day so depends when you're going |

I don't know if this is of any use, but it's the route we took in December.
Mostly easy going sandy tracks, there was on bit where there were a load of vans with dirt bikes, we saw a couple of other 4x4s on the tracks all day plus a couple of stationary travelers' sites. There was a bit where my friend's P38's air suspension got a bit confused because it really undulating, sky, ground, sky, ground... but the Defender just trickled along at tickover in 2nd. The first little bit isn't worth doing and I think was rather scratchy (the bit where there's just the red line before I remembered to turn tracking on and the blue line starts). There's a bit in the middle somewhere where there's a big muddy puddle. On the last picture, just where it says "East Wretham Heath" there's a picture of a duck. Just to the left of that if you look on the next scale map it says "Langmere" then you can see "Hereward Way". Just above the "Here..." there's a squiggle on the tracking which makes me think the muddy puddle is there. Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge |

I've taken into account the suggestions and put together a route. It is in a Microsoft Word document, so just print it out.

really not sure how to navigate around FB to get more details:
https://www.facebook.com/groups/2715522297...6134880830 I'm uncertain if this is a related photo or not A section 59 warning will initially be given to both the driver and the vehicle, which lasts for 12 months, when found driving without due care and attention, without lawful authority on land that does not form part of the road, or on a footpath or bridle way, and when alarm, distress, or annoyance has been caused to members of the public. Interesting on the FC website it has a section for motorbikes, which I assume is also valid, at least in part, for motor vehicles in general: "Motorbikes as groups or individuals are not allowed within Thetford Forest. There are two locations where an area has been set aside for motorbikes, these are strictly controlled, please contact the Thetford Ranger for more information. Motorbike usage within the forest is taken very seriously and anyone caught illegal riding can face heavy penalties. Two Motorbike events are held within the forest during November and March to avoid the bird breeding season." http://www.forestry.gov.uk/forestry/beeh-a5unl3 I'm guessing there are also areas of Thetford Forest that fall outside FC responsibilities if people are legally driving there. |

As Saturday 20feb16 is just a week away, I thought that this topic should be bumped onto the 'active' list. Hence this post.
Meeting place as above, McDonalds at Five Ways Roundabout, Mildenhall at 10.00 for a 10.30 depart. The plan, at the moment, is to use one route (see above) and keep a time differential so as to comply with the COP of a 6 vehicle limit. That way we can meet for lunch and assist each other if there is a breakdown. sgilmour, event organiser, is arranging the groups. See you there, Merlin |

You won't need recovery gear in Thetford Forest. Sometimes I see cars driving around, ordinary cars, like hunchbacks. Toilets are a bit thin on the ground, but I'll point them out. BTW Dad's Army was made around there and Thetford, the town, was Warlmington-on-sea.

Sorry everyone, I was meaning to send out emails to all with the information (thanks Merlin for taking this one on and saving my bacon!). I've had a job change and various other personal matters to deal with in the last couple of weeks and unfortunately I think I'm going to have to pull out of Thetford this weekend.
Merlin, I really appreciate you publishing your route and hope you still don't mind taking the lead as we spoke about before. Hopefully the day all goes smoothly and everyone enjoys themselves. Please post some pics and I'll hopefully join you all for another trip soon. Sorry for being a let down everyone, all the best for the weekend! SG |

SG, After all the work you've put in already, I'm sorry to hear you can no longer make it. I hope things work out and I'm sure we'll do it again before too long.
So... Merlin, I trust all is still OK for Saturday?! Thanks. |

So from the list I have of people who said they were going JOW, Tomcat and Merlin are confirmed which leaves Stevie D, Tack and Stupot who signed up but haven't confirmed they are still going.
If all above parties attend that will give the 6 car limit so shouldn't need any split groups which will make things a lot easier (unless any last minute requests come in). Thanks JOW, I'm gutted I can't be there but other priorities have reared their head unfortunately. If everyone enjoys themselves and fancies another trip we could arrange something in the summer possibly. SG |
