Clutch rattle confirmation (with video)
I *think* this is some fairly intense clutch rattle on my puma.

I've had it of sorts for a while, initially it was very faint and I thought it was engine knock. It's now like this:

it properly kicks in at 8 seconds and you see when I dip the clutch it goes.

I've only notice it appear from stationary startup, if i drive then idle it doesn't come. It also becomes less severe as the car warms up, becoming none existent once fully warm. (basically it's not a consistent thing, it sometimes doesn't happen at cold also).

other than the noise the car drives fine, clutch feels ok and gearbox is smooth in all gears, difflock and hi/low range.

I've spoke to my independent earlier and he was talking about gearbox lay shaft perhaps?? But is yet to hear the noise or see the car as he's not back till 4th Jan.

I'm fairly confident/hoping it's clutch rattle, can anyone who has experienced it confirm?

Puma clutch rattle is fairly constant, the change in intensity between hot and cold would suggest that it's more box related. Have you checked the lubricant levels and if the noise is still present with the main box in gear but transfer box in neutral? Steve.

Thanks for replying,

I'm yet to fully decide if I'm only hearing it at startup because that's the only real time I'm in neutral, clutch engaged and idle. i will do more trial and error testing tomorrow. I'm beginning to really think it is box related - not what I wanted to hear!

We had a steady "knock knock ..." at idle especially when the engine was warm. Disappeared when the engine ran at a higher speed or when the clutch pedal was depressed. I wondered if it was gear box related but when we had the clutch changed after a few years (70k) it disappeared. Tdci 2007.

Update:

Transfer box in gear, main in neutral, clutch pedal out - clatter
Transfer box in neutral, main in neutral, clutch pedal out - rattle (little less severe)
Transfer box in neutral, main in gear, clutch pedal out - rattle (same as above)
Clutch pedal in stops the rattle in any of above combinations

1 minute idle at full temp and after 10 mile drive - not rattle or sound at all

Does it always happen at exactly the same engine speed, or at a range of speeds? Ours happened only at the lowest idle speed when the engine was warm, sounded just like yours and stopped just the same when the clutch pedal was depressed. Also, ours has always had quite a lot of transmission backlash (not sure where and has never got any worse). It seemed as if that particular idle speed happened to be s resonant frequency of the gear train, and if I held the engine speed a little higher it didn't do it. I guess the dodgy clutch did not take out the engine vibration.

same situation here. exactly the same .....

I was told its the clutch spring got loose? aprently.

Try to put the T box in neutral and in 6th gear; that is in my defender when the rattle got really loud.

That is definitely clutch rattle.

Mine did the same thing. As I had only done 350 miles since buying it second hand (an 57 plate with 50K) I made a firm but clear appeal to the dealer to have it replaced under warranty, and they did.

Nice and quiet since. 2016 D4 HSE

Funny you should ask, I sent the same video to a guy I know who is a powertrain engineer at JLR who said:
Sound like clutch disc fiction for idle has dropped off, the fibre washer inside the clutch disc on early models would wear and cause this NVH issue' - as in it will rattle but won't fail.

Yesterday I was driving and got a couple of nasty crunches on gears, then pressing the clutch pedal it was really resistant and wouldn't change gear. I came to a stop in neutral and was pumping the clutch but nothing. I pushed to get it rolling and slid into 2nd gear without the clutch, then out of no where it started to work normally again. Since then it's stopped working twice but has started again no problem. The fluid level has remained constant throughout. It's off to the mechanic tomorrow but I'm hoping it's an unrelated cylinder problem - though if it's slave cylinder and the gearbox needs dropping i'll get the clutch changed regardless

My previous 110 had a rattle and similar resistance to go in gear, also made a few screeching noises. It slowly got worse until I had the clutch changed. On inspection the clutch plate springs were falling out and jamming on the other parts of the clutch which was what was causing the resistance to go in gear and the screeching noise because of the metal to metal contact.


....and now my 90 (that has only done 13,000 miles) has the begins of the rattle too! Big Cry

yeah I suspect so much. I'm just hoping it was master cylinder has that will keep the costs nice and low...if the gearbox is coming off then i'm going to just have all the clutch components changed whilst its off. Hopefully be done with it.

a quick update.
my dealer is currently replacing my clutch.

car is at 52k kms and will be out of warranty by the end of this month.
