BFG ATs will outlast any other standard 4x4 blocktread tyre, however in the winter on the roads or in the wet don't expect to stop quickly as you go sailing on by or into what ever you are trying to avoid...
Safety over value for money and longevity??? Think you'd better decide that one for yourself! 'PM' someone in the know who can possibly do you a deal... If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!! Treat every day as if it is your last....one day you will be right!! |

Whatever you decide on, if it is slippy it is like an elephant on iceskates when at speed...unless you get some super specific snow tires. cooper ms as bpman stated are good for winter traction as per coopertires.com 2008 Defender 110 60 year Edition (sold unfortunately)

The General Grabber AT2's have very thin side walls so if you do any rocky stuff watch out... I have ran both and cannot fault either really other than the BFG's just sail on in the wet. 2008 RS4 gone, 123d M Sport, and a Puma 90 XS..

I don't know as i had the BFG on a 2000 TD5 but my Puma has had mud terrains and KL71's which seem better on greasy roads.. also on greasy surfaces the BFG all terrains just turn into slicks and you will get stuck on flat greasy ground.
example of..... 2008 RS4 gone, 123d M Sport, and a Puma 90 XS.. |

I agree with BFG ATs being poor on wet roads. I suspect the ultra-high mileages that they last for has something to do with them being made of a hard compound, where as something stickier would be better for wet roads.
No experience of GGs though. Still keen to hear feedback on the new-spec Contis, they may be a good balance for winter roads... |

that people have problems with the BFG in the rain.
I have them on the 110, and they are lovely. it comes as no surprise to me that the votes are in their favour. No problems in the rain, however they do not particularly like thick clay. A world of improvement over the michelin XPC that Landrover put on the beast when she was made. |

BFGs are truly the winner for a good reason. But how are people driving in the wet? I have been running BFG muds (Apparently terrible in the wet) for the past 4 years and covered over 60,000 Miles and have lost grip only on 2 occasions and they were due to sheet ice- they have never missed a beat in the wet.
Remember you are driving a Land Rover they don't go round corners as fast as a Ferrari. Glyn *Edit*- The GG are great too, just a poor mans BFGs- if you can afford the BFG go for them, if not the GGs come a close second. |

In the wet my 265 BFG ATs would let go way before I would have expected from something classed as an All-Terrain - I used to think it was just myself having unrealistic expectations, and as I have no test results to prove it, I can't. But as others have said the same it kind of confirms what I felt... Fortunately because I drive it like a Defender (& not a Ferrari), no harm was ever done. Believe me I'd like to like them more, as they looked great, & I spent a lot of money on them! I've had XPCs on previous and now, which to be fair are probably more road bias, but they give me a lot more confidance in wet/snow/clay/icey conditions, and they have never embarrassed me in the occasional mud. I stand by my original comment on the BFGs, thats how I found them. GGs my be no better, I don't know. |

First choice BFG Muds
Second choice KL71s Based on 200k miles on the former in a Disco 2 and 10k miles on the latter on a Puma DC (and 20k miles in a Navara on BFG ATs). |

I've had BFGs for many miles, but to be honest, I now prefer the GG AT2. Whoever said the sidewalls are "thin" - sorry I think that's nonsense. They are equally as robust in my experience, just quite a bit cheaper if you're buying 5 or even 6.
