Mine was on the tailgate and also hinged at the top so that as the tailgate was lowered it swung out to miss the tow pintle and remain vertical.

A quick look around the web and I found this (sorry, but can't figure out how to get the picture to show)

It had been built by the previous owner as a pretty serious trials vehicle (I think), chopped down range rover chassis (80 inch from memory) and a TVR tuned V8 under the hood. The only picture I can find of it is this one which doesn't do the paint job justice, as it had metal flake in it like an old school dodgem car. Keith, what is the engine paint on your LWT? Is it BS 101 Sky blue or other? People’s recollections of the colour of new engines in at least S3 LtWts would be that it was not Sky Blue 101. They would be correct, the factory finish colour was in fact LAG. Reconditioned engines were hand painted Sky Blue 101 as the EMER describes (note it was not available in spraying version) The info is reiterated in AESP 0200-A-221-013 but is metricized to 5 & 10 litres but is still only brushing not spraying. All military Rover specs I have seen quote the engine interior & exterior to be the same. So the definitive answer for your engine is to drop the sump & look up. But any recording of colour can be flawed it depends if it is photoed in daylight, bright sunshine, fluorescent, incandescent or flash. Looking at Will’s nice engine the interior shots make it look almost LAG but out in daylight on the greener side of Sky Blue 101. As has been said there is a spectrum of manufacturer’s interpretations of a defined colour. It is worth noting a “PRESERVED” engine is just that it is not necessarily one that has been rebuilt. It just means it has been preserved in accordance with EMER WORKSHOPS N 111 Chapter 2. Obviously an engine must meet the correct Inspection Standards to pass into preservation whether it is a take-out, had minor repairs or fully rebuilt. So a preserved one will be a good ‘un. I don't know the spec for early LtWts but Rover engine colours for some contracts for the MOD in late 1950s-early 1960s. The enamel engine paint for both exterior & interior is specified as Donald Macphearson LSW.703. I have been unable to define that one. Crown paints who took over the company have no records. Again for those in doubt, drop the sump & see! As far as the 90A generator goes EMER POWER W 104/13 instructs that a repaired generator should be painted with H1/8010-99-220-2046 & in COSA H1(a) this equates to Heat resisting, brushing, black, 5 litres. This is essential for insulation purposes & particularly important for the diodes & heat sinks when wading. A contract rebuilt generator, as we are all familiar with, is Sky Blue 101. It has been mentioned that there could be confused with Sky Blue RAL & indeed I think different contractors have got confused. I have seen a very dark blue inside a generator but the more normal blue on the outside. _________________ Thanks to Clive on the LWT forum for this info . |

Mine is a 1971 with an FJ plate. Mine had a reurbished engine fitted in 1975. It had a rebuild plate riveted to the side. Something to check for when you get into the engine. So mine was painted sky blue then. 1995 Defender 110 CSW
