I've been thinking about something similar and after being in a caravan this afternoon I'm thinking about having a look at some of the smaller caravan LED fittings. Some of them are tiny, and they're designed to run on 12v so spot on really.

Providing you take out the standard incandescent interior light bulb the same circuit can easily be used to add some more LED lighting.
LED is the way to go. Some photos in 'my gallery' of some ideas you can use wiring wise. You can even use the dimming on off function mirroring the vehicle with no issue at all. |

A map light would be a brilliant idea, I have 2 of these.

Good idea on the caravan lights - I guess what I'm thinking of could be called reading lights.
id been put off converting the interior builds to LED's as I thought they couldn't be dimmed ? I'm rather fond of how they fade out ...... |

Not looked into part numbers and prices yet but this is what I was looking at, they're about the size of a £1 coin plus a bit for the surround but would be plenty bright enough to read by. They are directional so you would need to consider placement carefully but it would also make them less distracting.

They do dim but it's a bit more accelerated that incandescent bulbs due to the nature of how they work obviously.
But yes, a map light or something might be easier for you're purpose. |

It depends whether you get regulated ones or not whether they dim.
Taking Labcraft, their Scenelight is regulated and gives the same output over a range of voltages, something light 9-32V. Their map light isn't regulated and will nominally work over a much smaller range of 10-14V and won't be constant brightness over that range. I've got one of these fitted, it's very bright and uses a fraction of the power of the old one. I measured the old one at about 700mA, this at something like 170mA. http://www.outbound4x4.co.uk/shop/exterior...rior-light My girlfriend complains it's too bright though, if I'm dropping her off it blinds her when she gets out Anyway, point it because it's not regulated it does dim. |
