Modifying heated seat wiring?
Hi All

So after a couple of mishaps in the flooding whilst out on response work, I flattened my battery and didn't get chance to really top it up properly. I was using the heated screens and seats all the time to keep things warm and demisted for the best part of 48hrs in a row.

Does anyone think it would be possible to disconnect the front heated screen and heated seats from the vehicle battery and onto a second battery. Would it be as simple as pulling the load feed from the relay housing and rerouting it?

cheers North Cumbria Search and Rescue - Team Leader

Just install a split charge system otherwise how do you charge the secondary battery?? 2008 110 2.4 XS Utility (Hagrid)

Thats the plan lol. Got all the auxiliary systems going to be run off the second battery, but want to take the heated seats off the primary battery and onto the secondary so that if I'm parked up and not doing much I can't kill the main battery. I could install a new loom from FCX but I don't want that cost. North Cumbria Search and Rescue - Team Leader

The FCX kit is well worth the cost, easy fit too.

Hi there,

Have a look at the wiring diagram in this thread and it appears to be an easy project.

Interesting. Cheers steve. Just wondering if anyone thinks they have some form of timer circuit? Mine seem to go off after a short while and then won't turn back on for a longer period. Don't know if thats a 2.4TDCi thing? North Cumbria Search and Rescue - Team Leader

Are you leaving the vehicle parked up with the engine running or not? If not running, ignition on or off?

The heated screen does not operate with the engine off. Heated seats do not work with ignition off.

Depending on how you normally leave the vehicle, you may only need to rewire the seats.  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

If your on a split charge it doesn't really matter where they are connected too

You will only have to link batteries if main gets low 2008 110 2.4 XS Utility (Hagrid)

No timer on them, no. What you are experiencing is the thermal switch.  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

Martin, Thanks for the heads up on the heated screen. Don't need to worry about that one then (assuming front and rear are the same as its an XS) and possibly just the seats.

cheers

EDIT: Thermal switch, that'll be the offending item. So the next question is where is the switching done from the switch itself to the main seat? Would it perhaps be easiest to put some new connectors on the seats and use the feed to wire into a relay and then pull a new hard line in to run the load of the seats? North Cumbria Search and Rescue - Team Leader

Ah the rear screen is active with the ignition on, so even with engine off.

Definitely no timer on the heated seats, you can see yourself from the wiring diagrams.  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

Happy days. Just to clarify, is that diagram (supposedly from a TD5?) the same as a TDCi? Now just need to work out what connectors they are. Bah. Got to get the wing connectors as well at some point. North Cumbria Search and Rescue - Team Leader

I might have missed something obvious here, but why don't you just leave the engine running when you've got the ignition on?
Simple way to not flatten the battery is to only use electrical things when then engine is running, the heating works much better that way too Wink
