I broke mine last weekend changing the rubber, thought I knew what I was doing, I've done all the glass in my VWs before and not had a problem.
Wish I'd have got the windscreen man in to do it as I was advised when I said I'd do the defender myself I'm paying the excess but have to wait 4 weeks for them to get a top tint screen ordered. |

Why would you NOT use your windscreen insurance?
The windscreen excess is usually only around £50 and it has no effect whatsoever on your NCD, also it is completely hassle-free. I have had my heated screens replaced several times now and always use my cover, silly not to. Mind you, I always make sure I have a new rubber to hand before calling them. ONE LIFE, GET IT! |

According to my local windscreen man, flat screens are far less forgiving than curved screens.

My heated screen has a few broken elements and a chip. Just looked at my policy and the repair excess is a tenner, but replacement carries an excess of £140 ouch!!!

That is why you need to check insurance policy details on renewal, things like windscreen cover can make what initially look like a good deal so much more expensive in the long run. With my policy repairs are free and replacement is £50. The last two screens I had replaced were due to broken elements. ONE LIFE, GET IT! |

Great replies folks. Thanks.
I agree that this has highlighted the need to critically review insurance policies as much as anything! At this stage I'm airing on the side of getting 'the approved man' to do it via the insurance (excess) and I may even have a spare rubber to hand, although not for the reason suggested........... I suppose it does then bring me back to one of the original questions - why would you not have it done via the insurance? Noting that if your excess is significant that may be the reason. Some folks are clearly buying the screens and getting them installed themselves - I wonder why? (Rhetorical). This morning we enjoyed heavy, driving rain. Despite the state of the rubber, and the extent of the damage ,the screen didn't leak and the heater did its stuff. Maybe I'll leave it after all!!! Only kidding! PS the rest of the Landy leaked, just not the screen! Thanks folks. |

I have the same heated screen as was factory installed, so 11 years old. I only get a strip that works both sides but the glass is fine with no cracks or chips.
How do the elements fail if they are embedded into the glass? Is there some abrasion of the element somewhere that can be repaired? The e-bay suppliers? how likely that they can deliver to Poland without delivering a broken screen? Thanks Chris Defender 110 DC converted Auto BMW R1200GS BMW F650GS Dakar |

The element is laminated into the glass so no repair is possible. It is also very fine so even a slight impact can break it without damaging the glass. You could get a multimeter and on the lower corners of the glass each side there are terminals you can check. There are in fact two heater elements in the screen and both should read the same resistance value. I am unsure what that value is. Hmmm, seems pretty feeble to me. (the wire/design, not the answer!!)
My Landy had reasonably hard use in Polish winters and the awful out-of-town unmade roads, but the only impact on the screen that I am aware of would be the bumps on the potholes. I was wondering if there was some form of electric BUS bar or tape along the bottom of the screen that may have been abraded.....? Chris Defender 110 DC converted Auto BMW R1200GS BMW F650GS Dakar |

Corroded perhaps? A quick inspect of the terminals I mentioned will reveal. If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!
