Correct way to splice wire
For the auto electricians on here. What is the correct way to pick up a feed from another wire? I have always used one of two methods

1 strip a small part of wire and wrap the new wire in and tape up

2 scotch lock

I know scotch locks are not liked but are very easy but number one don't seem much neater so wondering what the 'official' professional way is.

Scotchlock - no way. They are unreliable, and allow moisture into the core of the cable Rolling Eyes

Number 1 only if you don't mind it coming undone Shocked

Number 1 plus a dab of solder is not bad.

Personally I would cut and re-join with solder and heatshrink covering up.

LR use these extensively in accessory fitting and I keep meaning to get some to try:

Cut the wire, strip the ends, insert all three and heat with a hot air gun.  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

I've never had much success with the heat shrink solder things I prefer a dab of solder then heat shrink over it.

Handy - thanks Martin. Reminds me of "Sleeves, self-soldering". Shows my age - anyone else remember them?

The other thing worth investing in is the rubberised cloth tape used by LR in all their looms. With a little effort you can add extra accessories to the loom that are alomst indistinguishable from original wiring. That's not a dent, it's a rivet. That's not a dent, it's a rivet. That's not ... oh! That is a dent!

Cut and paste from an identical thread. Crimps are noy unlike Martin's but you need the tool as well.

Hermetically sealed in-line splices are the best. There is a sleeve that is preformed with resin at each end that when you apply heat the sleeve shrinks and the resin melts making a 100% waterproof seal. I have bucket loads of these and can send you some in the post. You do need a crimping tool but you may be able to adapt if you have a crimping tool already. Alternatively if you are near Falmouth and can wait until the new year I will be down in January for dry dock for a few days and can lend/give you all you need. PM me if I can help. Soldering is not a bad idea too but I would use slightly larger heatshrink and smother the job in Sikaflex then shrink the heatshrink and allow the Sikaflex to go off, this will also ensure the job is waterproof.

The blue crimp depicted is middle size, there is a smaller red and larger yellow available dependant on cable sizes. Thumbs Up

Why are the red in both depicted cases for 0.5-1.5mm cable and both of the blue for 1.5-2.5mm cable, with no other size options available? Does blue by definition have to be bigger diameter cable?
Eric You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation.

I believe the crimps are colour coded by size, red, then blue, then yello. The colour is not there to differentiate between live and Earth. Poor choice of colour, but that's life! Use the cable colours to indicate the purpose of the wire! Plus, if you crimp, you could always heat shrink over the crimped connection like I do if I'm using a terminal, that way it can't be seen. Failing that, if your joining cable as opposed to terminating cable, solder them neatly and heat shrink.

red crimps are up to 1.5 mm cable
Blue crimps are from 1.5 mm-2.5 mm
Yellow are 4mm - 6mm

That is the largest insulated crimps you can buy. After that they come in Non insulated which you would slide heat shrink over and insulate that way.

Thumbs Up

Red, blue, and yellow (Who is afraid of red, yellow and blue? Laughing ) are the standardised colour codes for terminals for the wire diameter:
