When I up graded mine I just brought new vented calipers and discs, but bit of a shame as yours are new. Don't wish to offend, but shouldn't you engine brake more?

No offence taken.

The issue occurs rarely, on long steep hills. I think the issue is the weight in the truck ( which I'm addressing), engine braking is what is helping me slow down enough that the brakes don't fully fade to nothing.

The issue isn't a major problem, just something I'd like to address on my "ToDo" list.

I've seen a kit to upgrade to vented disks here. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/331602367789?clk...noapp=true

If I do this I'll also change the fluid and put braided hoses on.

Cheers

Simply buy vented calipers and discs, dont buy them from lr,100% cheaper from everywhere else,(they are AP calipers, not hard to find).tbh, non AP caliper bodies come from the same mold, they just have the AP name ground off.Pistons and seals can be supplied by anyone tho, stainless or not.As said, what are your driving habits, approaching steep hills in a lower gear/speed helps a lot, also momentarily releasing the brakes helps cool the discs (obviously before brake fade sets in).
Also DOT 5 is Silicon based which is a BIG NO in most vehicles. 5.1 is glycol based but totally unnecessary in a Defender unless you travel everywhere at 100mph with a fully loaded trailer,in which case you have poor driving habits and need to slow down.

Thanks for the info on DOT 5.

Cheers

It seams google is mans best friend ..............copy paste copy paste copy paste Laughing

First port of call is check all your brake lines for any corrosion brake fluid will absorb water though porous metal
& also said rubber flexi pipes (usually cracked) very obvious to see if you bend them!!! you can test the moisture
content of your fluid with a simple tester for under a tenner, or go down to your local fast fit kwik-fit/Ats ect & get
a free test Wink also get the boiling point checked. Once its failed then have a look at your pads, they have done
5k they will prob be glazed due to overheating, the more heat you can dissipate quickly from the braking surfaces
the better, upgrading your discs & pads will make a massive difference dimpled/grooved/drilled getting rid of hot
gases quicker than a flat surface these also help with cooling also invest in ceramic pads.

Changing to braided hoses is a great upgrade & dot 5.1 fluid (as already said) you can use dot 5 if flushed properly
( I have it in my Rs) as well as titanium plates between the pads & calipers, these take the heat from the calipers
in turn keeping the temp away from the fluid never seen them for a defender but a set could be manufactured from
a pad template.

Back soon got to go Wink
