It's just your rotar filter doing its job. Nothing to worry about. Some filters are nosier than others.

Need to read the workshop manual and find out what a rotar filter is and does !! Does it need cleaned ? Did make the noise before ! Tank |

The rotor filter is the in the dome shaped housing on the RHS of the block as you look at the engine from the front, its just behind the aircon pump/bracket.
I change it every 6 months when I do the oil change. Two 10mm bolts, undo these and remove bolts. Remove the dome lid and then remove the filter. Replace filter and replace rubber ring Bolt up and done - no need to drain the oil. 1999 Defender TD5 110 Regards John M0VAZ Econet Station 48 no clock |

Just be careful when tightening the two bolts, they're only M6 into an alloy casting and can strip the threads all too easily.
They don't need to be desperately tight for the O ring to make a good seal Also be aware that they are designed to be "captive" in the housing cap so you don't need to take them right out. |

Just had a service done on Tank but dont know if they changed it ? It just says oil filter and filter assembly ERR6299G and LPX100590M ?

So ERR6299G is the rotor filter ! I assume because its been changed that's why I hear the noise I didn't before ? It was so clogged up before it couldn't do what its suppose to do but the new one does?

Glad you now have peace of mind. I'd have been surprised if it hadn't been changed during the service BUT you just never know!! If you do attempt to service the Landy yourself in the future, which is very satisfying and the guys on here will talk you through every stage, do take heed of the wise words above: Use a Genuine LR filter. A modest cost uplift but well worth it. Take extra care with the housing bolts. They can be troublesome to remove and they can be over tightened. That said, it is a vitally important component, so well worth spending a bit of time and money. |

I would say the noise you could hear was the turbo, everyone with a turbo'd engine should let it tick over for at lesst a minute after driving, this allows the turbo to slow down while still recieving an oil feed.
The danger is, If you're driving hard and then turn the engine off straight away, the turbo is still spinning at a fairly high RPM, but as your engine if off it will not be getting an oil feed and in turn running your turbo dry, which is obviously a bad thing.. It may not be the turbo at all, but few things carry on spinning after the engine is off. do a test, let it just sit at idle for 5 minutes and turn it off, see if you hear the noise or if its, quieter, slower? then blast it down the road, pull over and get out, lift the bonnet and see if its the same noise you can here.. If it is, in the future let it idle for a few minutes before turning off.. My 1986 90 is currently on a full rebuild, with new chassis, Paint etc.. Very much a hybrid, TD5 Chassis, tub & bulkhead with a 200TDI and LT77 GB Painted in Stornoway Grey 2 years off the road, but getting close to completion now |

turns out it is the rotar filter !
Did what was advised. Opened the bonnet and left the car running and then got my son to turn it off. Sound definitely from the rotar filter and if you touched it you could feel the sound, if that makes sense. Thanks again for the advice. Great forum and really helpful to idiots like me ! Tank |
