Stephen, of course I stand to he corrected by the more learned on the forum, but these are side light bulbs, not headlights. Therefore ok? 2011 D4 Nara Bronze

Ray, i am sure you are better informed than i am, but the http://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/1989/1796/made does not make specific reference to LEDs. Is there other legislation we should be aware of so we remain legal? I also have LEDs, as supplied by a forum sponsor, in front and rear sides and brake lights. Much appreciated.

It's due to EU conformity, it's to be sure they are fit for purpose and visibility etc.

Under UK law all obligatory vehicle lights have to be typed approved. Look at Vehicle Lighting Regulations.
Then there are what is known as optional lights, e.g. Extra driving lights, fog lights etc. Side/position lights, indicators, headlights etc are obligatory lights on most modern road going vehicles. Type approval these days basically means E marked. If the obligatory lights fitted to a modern vehicle are not type approved/E marked then it is ILLEGAL to have them fitted to a road going vehicle. Forget the rubbish spouted by some E bay sellers with statements such as these LEDs are not E marked but will pass a UK MOT. They are ILLEGAL, end of story. The MOT checks that the lights function correctly and not on them being type approved or E marked. You have a collision where lights could have played a part and the loss adjuster/collision investigator does their job correctly you may find the insurance company decides your policy is void, which then opens up a rather nasty minefield. If you have a type approved filament light and replace the filament bulb with a LED cluster then the type approval is invalid as that light fitting got approval as a filament light. If you want LED side/position lights, indicators etc, buy the correct units which are type approved/E marked and be sure you are LEGAL. Brendan |

Going off on a bit of a tangent, the law about vehicle lights is a bit out of date, also confusing as there is UK law and EU regulations involved.
The UK law does not mention LED's nor does it mention laser sourced headlights. With laser sourced headlights there has been some outcry that they should be banned as they are dangerous to innocent bystanders. However the laser output is not used to illuminate the road it is used as the source of light and is combined/converted into light in the normal visible spectrum. The vehicle manufacturers would be breaking the law if they knowingly produced something which was harmful to the public health. It is rather a case that the law has not kept abreast with modern technology and people not fully understanding the technology.. What is perfectly clear in law is that all obligatory vehicle lights must be type approved and must not dazzle other road users. In the UK it is not illegal to sell non type approved vehicle lights as there is a legitimate market for them for vehicles which do not ever go onto public road, however that is rather a small limited market. It is however illegal to have non type approved obligatory lights on a road going vehicle. The wholesale price of the non type approved vehicle lights is a fraction of the price of the wholesale price of a type approved vehicle light. Some of the sellers of the non type approved headlights will compare their lights favourably to type approved well respected headlight manufacturers. This is akin to passing off/trading off their lights against the better known brands. What I have not seen is them stating that these lights are illegal to use on the public road. Yes there can on the face of it be a price saving for the final consumer, however is the final consumer aware of all the possible implications? Or is the final consumer just more interested in the short term financial saving? At the end of the day, it is your vehicle, your money, your choice of what items to buy, your choice of supplier etc. However I do hope people have enough knowledge/information to make a proper informed choice. Having bought LED sidelights, and been disappointed with the e-bay purchase, I wonder which are the best ones to buy. Any recommendations?
