Long post, please bare with me...
I need a bit of advice with regards wiring accessories from the Alternator. I recently fitted Wipac crystals and the Boomslang loom to go with them. After reading many posts on the subject I took the main feed for the loom from the alternator on my Td5. I have also wired in a Stebel Nautlius horn and to tidy things up I put in an aux fuse box in the engine bay. The horn and lights are fed from the fusebox and the fusebox main feed is from the alternator. I now want to wire in 2x130W KC Daylighter spots. I had planned to take their main feed from the aux fuse box but I am concerned about the load I am putting on the alternator and importantly the LR wiring to it from the battery. Is this safe or should I run in a new feed from the battery to the engine bay fuse box? If I need a new feed, how do you do this as the aux box is rated to 100amps which would require a pretty thick cable from the battery (with a 100A inline fuse of course) over a fairly long distance. Highest current cable I have seen sold by the metre seem to only be rated to 63A. |

Cable doesn't have to be stupid money: http://www.beal.org.uk/automotive/automoti...00146.html
But would be a bit unnecessary. When the engine is running, everything is powered from the alternator anyway. So putting additional loads at the alternator instead of at the battery actually decreases the load on the battery-alternator cabling. |

260W is approx. 22A, most alternators are rated 70A or 100A, so the alternator will cope. Cheers, Vincent
