A safety notice has just come out about Wolf wheels. This has been reinforced by the fact one of our Lanys lost a wheel today.
Due to 5 cases in the last month this safety notice has come out. Drivers are to visually check all wheel nuts prior to driving the vehicle, if any nuts are found to be loose they are to be tightened with the issued bar or suitable torque wrench and further tightened after 30 mins of driving. The torque setting is 170Nm I think this more boils down to poor maintenance ie not correctly torquing the wheel nuts after refitting of the wheel, I regularly remove/replace wheels and have never had any problems and after years and millions of miles working on a fleet of vehicles fitted with them its suspicious so many are failing now. So just a little remainder for people with them fitted it might be worth a quick check just to be safe [/b] 90 wolf - Jasmin http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic39408.html 90 V8 - Maggie http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic42564.html 110 TD5 - Buggsy http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic59029.html 52HG25 lightweight https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic72342.html D3 Hse - Fiona Capri 2l S - Anna Think I might have a problem............ |

I always do 170Nm and keep a good quality 1/2in nuckle bar/socket in the bag (along with a bag full of tools) 90 wolf - Jasmin http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic39408.html

Thanks - can't do any harm to check mine in the morning.
Always carry heavy duty socket, long breaker bar and 4ft length of scaffold pipe - having been caught out before. |

I put nut indicators on my wheels for exactly this reason.
Click image to enlarge Always give my truck a quick look over every weekend to make sure its ok for work on Monday and always check to make sure they haven't moved. Then once a month I jack up the wheel take it off inspect brakes and put back and re-torque. Some don't like them because they think it makes it look to much like a utility board truck, but I quite like them so Click image to enlarge Running Restoration Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/post323197.html#323197 Self confessed mileage hunter |

^^ all the current fleet of Wolfs run with the longer studs, it was only the updated titounus ? Can't remember the spelling 110/90 fleet that used the shorter stud. I don't know of any still in use. 90 wolf - Jasmin http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic39408.html

Plus most civvy vehicles with HD wheels, at least all the ones I've seen anyway.
110nm is more than enough, they won't come undone. |

I'm not quite sure how a visual check will spot loose (or insufficiently tightened) nuts! I guess if they've departed the vehicle it may spot them though.

Usually see rust marks on the wheel around the nut (on steel wheels ).Also vosa (before it was vosa..or wotevah it is now) used to be called wheel tappers, coz a loose nut when tapped with a hammer made a different sound to a tightened nut.But in general I agree, only time I've known wheels come off trucks is when there have been nuts missing to start with, which was entirely the drivers fault for not checking them on his (vosa recommended)DAILY checks, also, even wheels that have stayed attached have deformed massively because of missing wheel nuts. Interestingly,HGV drivers are required to check wheel nuts on a DAILY basis,a quick look thru the Defender handbook doesn't seem to mention them at all,so again it looks like poor maintenance from the garage (another reason I don't trust fitters). R.e Wolf wheels,I really would wack them up to the recommended torque tho,a huge amount of difference between an out of balance alloy wheel and Wolf wheel. You bounce a wheel off the kerb whilst driving at speed can also loosen wheel nuts. Pov.spec,ftw. 2006, 110,TD5. |

170nm is only 125ftlb which i can do with a 12inch adjustable by hand so no issues doing it with a wheel brace!!
Could it be people not cleaning mating faces thust putting them on torquing them up the crap falls out and thus a lose nut!!! That or someone not knowing how to use a torque wrench lol |

I'm trying to remember if a torque wrench was a REME tool or just available from Stores - it certainly didn't sit in the CES kit kept on any vehicle.

Land Rovers only come with a wheel brace, the torque wrench is held both by REME (in the stores and in Vms toolboxes) and also by the MT stores who issue the CES for the wagon.
The bigger trucks are issued with the 3/4" drive torque wrench now. 90 wolf - Jasmin http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic39408.html 90 V8 - Maggie http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic42564.html 110 TD5 - Buggsy http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic59029.html 52HG25 lightweight https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic72342.html D3 Hse - Fiona Capri 2l S - Anna Think I might have a problem............ |
