Talking of left hand and right hand thread, is my memory playing up, or would my long since sold 1949 80" have left hand threads on the left hand wheels? It was either the 80 or an old Richardson horse trailer we had. I do think it was the 80 though.

Exactly my thinking - A 'visual' check? Like the driver has noted a wheel nut is missing or has loosened off to the point at which it can be seen to be loose. When you can visually see that a safety critical component with a specified torque setting is loose - it's too bleedin' late!

Just about as sensible as a certain government agency that asks its employees - if in their opinion their own vehicle would pass an MoT test. I did ask the junior clerical assistant (graded at 'I've just left school with a scraped pass in Home Economics') what qualifications she had to sign off the form and was her opinion worth tuppence!

All Series Ones have conventional right hand threads on wheel nuts. In fact I am not aware of any Land-Rovers or Landrovers which have used LH threads. It is possible that some of the oddballs did, such as SMOMOT and OTAL, but I doubt even that.

Must have been the trailer.

Simple engineering standards say at least 1 thread should be clear of the nut, in our company we always have 3.

You see a lot of wolf wheels fitted were the thread is flush or recessed into the nut.

If its in-correct torque - it could be paint on the wheel which is giving a false feeling of tightness which then breaks up under the compression of the nut - leaving the nut slack .... this happened to me once with a newly painted Mach 5 wheel.

Was it a REME veh that the wheel came off? which Bn are you with? I want to point the finger at anyone I know there Rolling with laughter My 1986 90 is currently on a full rebuild, with new chassis, Paint etc.. Very much a hybrid, TD5 Chassis, tub & bulkhead with a 200TDI and LT77 GB Painted in Stornoway Grey Smile 2 years off the road, but getting close to completion now

At Scania we did them to 620Nm.

I went out to a breakdown once on the A14 near Kettering when I worked for Scania, this is how it went...

Scania Assistance: Hi Browny, can you attend a breakdown on the A14
Me: I'd rather not, it's 4am, whats wrong with it?
Scania Assistance: Well you have to, it's your job! Lack of power then no Drive, Possible clutch
Me: I'll be there in 40 minutes
*Sleeps for 15 minutes then Drives to A14*
Me: Parks up behind with beacons on and cones off carrageway (police didnt bother turning up)
I walk down the side of the 40 odd ton unit & fully loaded trailer, STOPPED IN HORROR! then wondered bewildered towards the cab.

I opened the door to a typical 30 Stone sweaty mess.

Useless Truck Driver: Hello mate, I think i've got no clutch. . . . . .

Me: I think you've got a bigger problem than that sunshine, YOU'VE LOST BOTH OF YOUR NEARSIDE DRIVE WHEELS!

The lacl of power was obviously when he had lost his 2nd wheel and was coasting thinking it was lack of power..

Highways agency tip up half hour later asking if the wheel they found in the central resevation THREE MILES BACK had anything to do with me.

Never did find the other wheel.

6 of the studs were fully intact with minumal damage and 4 had sheared off completely, I would imagine that most were loost and the rest werent much tighter..

He insisted that he had torqued them before he left that morning, but drivers rarely do.

Ultimately if he had killed someone it would have been down to him, unless a mechanical fault was found with the studs/ nuts My 1986 90 is currently on a full rebuild, with new chassis, Paint etc..
