What makes you think it would "knacker the electrics"? How on earth could it? If you have an axle diff locked, the two wheels cannot turn at different speeds and hence cannot initiate the TC. It is conceivably possible but incredibly unlikely that you might manage to get the locked axle spinning faster than the unlocked one (but this would involve both incompetence and freak circumstances) and even then the TC would simply brake both wheels. |

They do. Whether it is the optimal way to operate a difflock or not is debatable and subjective, with many arguments for and against. Overall it has few - if any - advantages. |

Not sure, but thought I'd ask the wise, I assumed that TC would be smart enough to deal with a locker!
Ah, so it could, just maybe…?!
That's more reassuring!! Thanks for the info guys, happier now! |

So Detroit in the rear and thru-trac in the front axle and off you go.
Or if you want to spend money to get a little better result use arb or simular in both axes. With both you need stronger half shaft. I have the detroit - thru-trac setup and I love it. I still use the standard half shafts in the front axles with Simex tyres and till now the keep up with it. Does the tc work in low range with the diff locked on a new (64 plate) Defender? I assumed that it would, but got quite stuck towing a trailer across a wet field today - there was lots of backwards and forwards action with plenty of right foot but no sign of the tc kicking in. As a last resort I took it out of diff lock and low and behold, tc light started flashing (driving style the same - rather aggressive) and out she drove. All I can assume is that diff lock disengages tc for some reason, but that seems daft to me. Can anyone enlighten me?

TC is active with difflock or should be with your vehicle yes.
were the wheels on each axle turning at the same speed with diff lock in? if so TC wont do anything. Cheers James 110 2012 XS Utility 130 2011 M57 bespoke Camper 90 2010 Hardtop 90 M57 1988 Hardtop |

To be honest I don't know as I couldn't actually see them but it appears (from the tracks left) that they were all spinning - I'd be amazed if they were all turning at an equal enough speed to not trigger the tc though? If they were all spinning equally I would have thought that they would have generated enough drive to get unstuck - it wasn't until the diff lock was disengaged and the tc started working that the Landy pulled itself through. If it is supposed to work irrespective of the centre diff then it must have been an equal wheel-speed spin - I just find that a little surprising (this was flat out in low third).

it does work irrespective of diff lock yes.
if they were all spinning at the same speed you would of thought it would drive out anyway. cross axle it with diff lock in and try the TC Cheers James 110 2012 XS Utility 130 2011 M57 bespoke Camper 90 2010 Hardtop 90 M57 1988 Hardtop |
