Home > Puma (Tdci) > Oily smell - specifically related to Heater blower being on |

Hi all.
A quick question if I may. The 90 XS 2.4 has a distinct "hot oil" smell coming through into the cabin when the heater blower is switched on (and set to warm/hot). There is a bit of oil mist around the passenger side of the engine under the bonnet (top of engine) I've noticed - is there a breather hose or something that could be causing it, or something else entierly. For clarity, its not an exhaust smell, and its certainly not a coolant smell either. Any ideas? Cheers Matt. |

I can't tell you where the oil mist is coming from but the fact that it's getting into the cabin is almost certainly a result of the poor seal between heater duct and bulkhead. It's a rubbish design that just relies on a bit of compressed foam, unfortunately. Darren

Not sure, to be honest.
Reading both of our replies back, I realise that I should have said the foam seal between the heater duct and the heater casing, which is on the bulkhead Darren 110 USW BUILD THREAD - EXPEDITION TRAILER - 200tdi 90 BUILD THREAD - SANKEY TRAILER - IG@landroveranorak "You came in that thing? So I've had a look at this and it certianly is a rubbish design ! The foam is compressed fairly well towards the wing side, but towards the engine of the its not compressed at all, and I can weave my finger into the gap. This certainly is a prime suspect, but I'm just struggling with why I only get the smell when the heater is set to hot, and not on cold (when you'd think it would be drawing air the same way) Last edited by Matt_H on 21st Oct 2021 4:45pm. ...next question, how do I remove the plastic intake ducting (not the HVAC unit) so I can improve the seal, and potentially clean some oily stuff off the leading edge of the heater matrix through the intake vent hole?

..and I can now see its held in by the wing top vent, and there are a couple of metal wing braces in the way. I've also noticed that the foam seal in one area has actually gone inside the join, so is doing nothing useful there at all.
I think this will be a job for the weekend, once this current ice cold wind has dropped. And thanks to "Nigel" - I now know you can't remove the duct without removing the heater ( ) so I'll see what I can achieve by losening it first. Last edited by Matt_H on 21st Oct 2021 2:17pm. it really is a terrible design.
When I get some spare time (!) I intend to try to put a fixing in there to hold the two together. I think it was a thread where some cable ties allowed the 2 pieces to be clamped together. EDIT: I can't now find the thread I was thinking of, but will pop back and update when i do! |

This was my thread on my solution to the poor fit.
https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic75787.html It's done lots of miles since and all fine. Sucks from the wingtip vent nicely! |
