United Kingdom 2012 Defender 90 Puma 2.2 XS CSW Keswick Green
I unplugged the EGR valve on my 1996 300Tdi Defender about 20 years ago. So far no check engine light, or any ill effects whatsoever.

This could be because the 300Tdi does not have a check engine light. Very Happy Puma 90 XS Station Wagon in Keswick Green 2012 2.2 Tdci

Brazil 2004 Defender 110 300 Tdi SW Alpine White
I didn't know the 300TDI had even an EGR... Imagine a 'check engine' light... I mean... My 300TDI (MY 2004) doesn't have either one. 2020: Defender 110 SW 300 Tdi 2004 Alpine White

Our 300Tdi certainly has an EGR valve. They stopped making the 300Tdi around 1998/99 if I recall correctly, so your 2004 truck should have a Td5 engine ? Puma 90 XS Station Wagon in Keswick Green 2012 2.2 Tdci

Brazil 2004 Defender 110 300 Tdi SW Alpine White
Here in Brazil, the year/engine combinations were different.

Until 2005, we had only Tdi engines. From 2005 to 2006, we had some units coming with Tdi and some coming with TD5 engines. From 2007 onward, we had TDCi (a.k.a. Puma) 2.4 engines only. I'm not sure, but I believe we had some units of the 2.2 TDCi in 2011. After that, we didn't have any Defenders being built here.

"The 300Tdi was replaced in 1998 by the 5-cylinder Td5, bringing to an end the line of Land Rover 4-cylinder engines that can be traced back to 1957. The Td5 engine was loosely based on the Rover Group's L-series diesel engine. The 300Tdi remained in production in Brazil, and was offered as an option on rest of world (non-UK/Europe) models. Following Ford's acquisition of Land Rover in 2000, the engine was used in Brazilian-built Ford pick-up trucks as well.[13] Increasingly restrictive emissions laws worldwide and falling sales led to production of the 300Tdi ending in 2006."
