Later front lights etc onto 200 tdi?
Apologies for repeating part of an earlier post but think the question probably got lost in my other ramblings.

The headlight surrounds, grill and lights are all tired and though I was hoping not to replace them all I am now thinking that I shoul,d with cheap aftermarket TD5 grill and surrounds from eBay, plus take-off later style indicators & side lights and crystal headlights.

The question is - Will it all go together easily or will it create any fitting issues including the wiring connectors going from old style two piece lights to the later style one piece items?

The Wipac Crystals is a fantastic upgrade which I have done myself which can be found here.

I would highly recommend this upgrade as the amount of light they throw is fantastic- pair it with a up rated loom and you have a very reliable and very good set up without all the hassle (and huge expense) of going down the LED Route.

The Td5 grill will fit, the only difference is on the headlight surrounds there will be little vents between the marker light and indicator. This is for the horn which is relocated on a Td5, shouldn't make too much difference it just depends how much you want to keep it looking original - most people wont notice.

With regards to changing the bulb holders, you can get genuine ones for not much money still from Land Rover which work fine which will be a good direct replacement. The alternative is you would have to chop off your bullet connectors and find the appropriate connector type and then buy a new set of Td5 ones to match which may or may not be cheaper. Running Restoration Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/post323197.html#323197

There are a few conversion routes...

  • Make adapter harnesses for the front lamps between the bullets on the old loom and the Econoseal connectors for the new lamps
  • Cut the bullets off the vehicle loom and fit the Econoseal connectors
  • Buy adapter looms - STC1188 is the 2 pin adapter loom for single-function lamps. These are about £19 each from LR, or less than £4 each as a pattern part.

Econoseal connectors if you go DIY: http://polevolt.co.uk/acatalog/Econoseal_Connectors.html

(For further information, the adapter loom for the 3 pin rear tail/brake lamp is STC4637. £22 LR or £5-6 aftermarket)  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

Such good news, thanks very much guys and pleased that it appears I have also facilitated some further education!

RRUK, I had seen that but as I do not need rear rear fog and reversing and will be looking for crystal headlights it doesn't appear to make much sense and I had assumed you would not want to split?
