Puma bonnet sound deadening...
Has anyone done this?

I have spent quite some time searching for an under bonnet sound deadening 'kit' for the Puma but cannot find much aside from a bit of Dynamat...

I think the problem is with the bonnet shut, there is less than 1cm clearance between the top of the engine and the forward bonnet 'bulge', so I am guessing whatever was used would be in contact with the engine... heat and vibration transfer issues?

Is there a solution? I think most of the Puma noise comes from the engine top end!

There's a product called fatmat that I've recently seen fitted to a puma bonnet. I'm waiting on a price before I order any though they as I want to do the whole double cab.

The guy that fitted it said it was promising though...

All down to cost and the way it looks, I don't really like the big silver logos or shiny tops. Fatmat is all black and supposedly just as good... But the proof will be in the pudding...

Yup, the Dynamite does not contact... but I did not know if it would be effective! Clearly it is!

Have you seen Barney's thread. With a sound reduction of only 2dB it's not worth the effort surely? Save your money for something worthwhile.

I used 10mm latex backed felt on my bonnet. Pov.spec,ftw. 2006, 110,TD5.

Mine comes with some deadening already, factory fit. 'Comfort Pack' I think. But as K9F alludes to, I wonder what difference sound deadening will make to a Puma engine, they're pretty quiet already. I would have thought the bulk of the noise in a Puma Defender would come from theroof, footwell, doors, rear wheel arches and middle/rear floor tub. I would suspect getting those sorted would have a far greater impact than engine noise. Monsieur Le Grenadier

Genadier is right that its a combination of sound deadening all panels that really makes the difference.
IMHO we'll never achieve anything stunning due to:

1. The front windscreen which is a similar thickness to my greenhouse
2. Noise transmitted from the bulkhead which is all but impossible to soundproof effectively.

One option is simply to turn the radio up Mr. Green

If I ever go to fully reassemble the rear of my 90 (rear seats are still at the trimmers waiting for the full leather treatment) I'll re-meassure the noise with my trusty sound meter.

I fully treated with Dynamat and Dynaliner my Defender 130 but did not get around to the bonnet until recently. TBH I have not noticed any difference since doing it. Sad 993 Varioram - Guards Red
