Have had similar symptoms with another vehicle if it starts to work okay again at lower temperatures. Turned out to be the air gap was too large on the magnetic compressor clutch. Worked fine with a cold engine and in the winter but warm engine and high air temperatures and it would either not engage at all or would cycle on an off too frequently. Noticable by the click-click-click of it cutting in and out every 5secs or so.
Never bothered to fix it myself but there was a lot of info on various Volvo sites about re-shimming the clutch. Not too sure on how accessible it is on an L322 TDV6 or V8 though. Steve 02' 110 TD5 Double Cab Rebuild Thread |

Always nervous of after market quick fixes, but certainly looks like the problem is a very slow leak |
