On 290 miles on this tank with a bit more than 1/8 of a tank showing. It has plummeted from 1/4 tank though. Likely to beat 308 but by how much
It's not a fair test either as 4 things have changed since the last tank: intermediate oil change, switched to BP fuel, driving it like a Td5 (keeping revs under 2k wherever possible) and I have found what think more 'steady state' route for my commute. 1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top 2015 D90 XS SW |

All very impressive, but is it really good for the engine generally to keep running the tank so low...
You will quite likely be starting to pick up the water and other undesirable muck sitting in the bottom of all our fuel tanks... Personally, I think it has to be better in the long term, to fill up before we go too much below a quarter tank left, although once in a while may not do any real harm... Just sayin'... Rog... I get roughly 250 - 300 miles on a tank which is good as my 90 has an auto conversion. Driving mainly on fast roads with London and Suffolk at either end. Not particularly slow, either, as also have remap to 170 BHP.

What is it about the modern engines that makes them so much less efficient than the old ones? Are they heavier? Is it the emissions stuff bolted to them?
Unless I'm doing something silly like pulling a trailer I very rarely fail to get 300 miles before the light comes on with the 200Tdi, and that's with the 12-gallon side tank |

I poodle about in 2nd gear shooting lions and giant pandas and regularly get 350 as the orange light comes on. New fully synthetic oil and filter, air and fuel filters, new EGR unit and MAF sensor made a massive difference the EGR especially. 2008 RS4 gone, 123d M Sport, and a Puma 90 XS..

I head up the A1 from Surrey (round the M25) up to Yorkshire quite regularly, about 200 miles... I fill up at the beginning and fill up just before home... otherwise i wouldn't make it... Are defenders supposed to be driven at 80mph

I'm regularly getting 300-330 miles per tank from my new 90SW.
Steady A road driving to work and then weekend use which is a mix of town and trips out. I will say that once my light comes on I get to the nearest station as quick as I can, the needle quickly heads south once the light comes up. I always try and make sure there is a 1/4 of a tank in I case I'm not close to a garage. |
