Update on oil leak 2009 Tdci Defender
Hi all,
So my oil leak is really being a pain in the ass - I think I've narrowed it down to the inlet manifold...or at least that's where it's dripping from - does anyone have an opinion on what it's likely to be? - I'm assuming I cannot get an oil leak from the manifold it'self as it's air (am I right in saying that?) - it mist be something around/behind it. The oil in the sump has no water contamination - the exhaust manifold below the inlet manifold appears clean, fuel pump bolts and vac pump have been ruled out. Looking at a schematic engine diagram there is a Core plug down there...anyone had any experience with this type of thing?
As usual your thought would really be helpful
cheers
Mike

I was just looking at your other posts to try to get more background on this.

Are you sure it is oil, not fuel? It is possible that the Pressure Control Valve on the common rail might be leaking fuel when the rail is pressurised. This makes significant mess and also might account for your stuttering symptoms.

Also, I am not sure what you mean by this...

... since the exhaust manifold is on the other side of the block and isn't under the inlet manifold!

Simply

it is the oil vapor recovered from the headcam cover to the inlet manifold.

it's quite normal see a little oil sweat on Puma engine in the Stainless Steel inlet pipe... Discovery 5 td6 HSE Stornoway Gray Outback Engineering Limited Edition

Hi thanks for your responses, sorry I meant water manifold not exhaust
It's definitely oil.....buut just went out and took the cover off over the injectors and there is wet pooling round the base of the injectors and around the bolt heads. Now, it could be because I washed it of with gunk on Monday - but she's been run quite a lot of longish journeys since then so I would Have thought the water would have evaporated by now. So I'm thinking rocker cover gasket - how would that fit the symptoms already mentioned?
Once again - really do appreciate your help guys
Cheers
Mike

Hi, did you ever get to the bottom of this? I had a small leak from the single gasket last year which I replaced but it looks to be a lot more leaking on the engine side. Its like oil but more liquid and definitely black. Its been leaking down, not loads but enough to notice. Is it fuel mix in the manifold that's leaking out? All I know is I checked the other side of the engine and all dry. Defender owner since 2007

Rocker gasket, inlet manifold gaskets, injector seals in the rocker, and the round O ring on the inlet,
These all go rock hard over time as they are all rubber.

I did mine recently, like you I had a really nasty oil leak that ended at the bell housing,
Every gasket I removed was either cracked or shrunk.

Change them all on the top end, and your problems will be solved,
