I was just looking at your other posts to try to get more background on this.
Are you sure it is oil, not fuel? It is possible that the Pressure Control Valve on the common rail might be leaking fuel when the rail is pressurised. This makes significant mess and also might account for your stuttering symptoms. Also, I am not sure what you mean by this...
... since the exhaust manifold is on the other side of the block and isn't under the inlet manifold! |

Simply
it is the oil vapor recovered from the headcam cover to the inlet manifold. it's quite normal see a little oil sweat on Puma engine in the Stainless Steel inlet pipe... Discovery 5 td6 HSE Stornoway Gray Outback Engineering Limited Edition IID Pro MV License |

Hi thanks for your responses, sorry I meant water manifold not exhaust
It's definitely oil.....buut just went out and took the cover off over the injectors and there is wet pooling round the base of the injectors and around the bolt heads. Now, it could be because I washed it of with gunk on Monday - but she's been run quite a lot of longish journeys since then so I would Have thought the water would have evaporated by now. So I'm thinking rocker cover gasket - how would that fit the symptoms already mentioned? Once again - really do appreciate your help guys Cheers Mike |

Hi, did you ever get to the bottom of this? I had a small leak from the single gasket last year which I replaced but it looks to be a lot more leaking on the engine side. Its like oil but more liquid and definitely black. Its been leaking down, not loads but enough to notice. Is it fuel mix in the manifold that's leaking out? All I know is I checked the other side of the engine and all dry. Defender owner since 2007

Rocker gasket, inlet manifold gaskets, injector seals in the rocker, and the round O ring on the inlet,
These all go rock hard over time as they are all rubber. I did mine recently, like you I had a really nasty oil leak that ended at the bell housing, Every gasket I removed was either cracked or shrunk. Change them all on the top end, and your problems will be solved, Easy job to do 80" 80" 86" 88" 90" Wanted, Forward Control Anything considered. |
