dont use britpart sump plug
Last weekend serviced the landy, I had ordered a genuine service kit from a usually reputable supplier on the internet, all items arrived in LR packaging and marked LR except the sump plug that was in a blue britpart plastic bag.

As I was keen to do the job against my better judgement I used the britpart sump plug.

I oiled it before fitting and torqued it up carefully.

Anyway today when checking underneath I noticed the sump was damp in the area of the plug, on inspection I could clearly see the the rubber oring on the sump plug had deformed.

I have therefore now dropped the oil, replaced the plug with a genuine one and refilled the oil.

The britpart sump plug oring is all chewed up, I have never seen this on a removed plug before, which normally always look as good as when fitted

I would never knowingly order britpart and I will never again fit anything from them that could effect the safety or reliability of my car.

I will also be taking this up with the supplier and wish I had in the first place. DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS,

I hope everyone is well and your land rovers make you happy

Thats not good Sad

Such a safety critical part!

Let alone the potential to damage to your own vehicle from loosing oil but leaving oil on the road for motorbikes and other vehicles is never a good thing.

Would be interested to see what there response is!

Glad you got it sorted though Thumbs Up Running Restoration Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/post323197.html#323197

To a certain extent even good o-rings can deform. Just requires the user to 'nip up' just past the wrong point and it's gone. Never liked rubber seals on the sump. Always prefer to stick to tried and tested crush washers.

Damp patch or leaking ?

seen plenty of sump plugs with a damp patch

did you wash plug off after tightening with brake cleaner , was the oil patch from where you oiled the plug , a couple of drips will spread out when run and warmed up

As said any o ring can catch and deform

This thread had me thinking not about the Blue bag company but about the sump plug seal. On all my seven Land Rover product's that I have owned the sump plug has always been a copper washer. I have just been out to confirm that that is what is fitted now.

When did they start with the rubber washers? Don't make old people mad.
We don't like being old in the first place,
so it doesn't take much to Censored us off.

here is a photo of the offending item, note as previously stated I oiled it and torqued it up correctly, not had a problem with OEM which look as good as new when removed , this clearly has a rubbish seal

Main dealer in MK managed to strip the sump thread of my 90 on the first service (factory fitted parts obviously), never went back again. ONE LIFE, GET IT!

I've reused the original sump plug and washer several times on my 2010 Puma (and previous Deafeners) and I never use a torque wrench.
A couple of winds of thread tape and a drop of marine gasket maker and in it goes. Never had one leak yet.

I have said this before, and will no doubt say it again in the future, but I can in all honesty say that I have never encountered a Britpart component which hasn't had some kind of deficiency, not once, not ever!

I will now only use a Britpart component if I need it urgently and there simply is no alternative. In this case I will replace it as soon as possible afterwards.

I simply don't understand how this company not only survives, but thrives, on producing such borderline stuff.

My local Dealer made me laugh a few weeks ago,
I was getting some parts, and while looking through a shiney BritPart accessory book it had a photo of their head office/warehouse.

He told me that's not the office, that's the returns department! Rolling with laughter

I can honestly say that every item I've used from them has been utter junk!
I had a set of their vented discs, 3 weeks before they warped!

How the hell do they get away with it? Shocked 80" 80" 86" 88" 90"

Wanted, Forward Control Anything considered.

Because people still buy despite numerous forums being festooned with negativity about them including this one.
