2003 steering wheel spline advise please
Evening all,
I have a 2003 TD5 and want a smaller steering wheel apparently there are 2 types splines 36 and 46?
Were the steering wheels with splines made for different years?
Any help would be appreciated.
Cheers

I think you can find out the info via either the Exmoor Trim or Bolt On Bits Web/EBay pages - under their steering wheel boss sales info. I think the latter has quite a lot of info based on their experience of people buying the wrong ones. It's worth a look.

I recall that the spec also depends on model not just year.

Mine's a 2004 TD5 XS and it has 36 splines but I couldn't guarantee it'll be the same for yours.

Cheers,

Will

Hi there Landydefender1. I'm sure there will be good advice on this forum about what steering wheel is for what, but there is an excellent guide on the Mud UK site. Have a look on mudstuff.co.uk and search for steering wheels and a guide with pictures of the different types of Landy steering wheels comes up - very informative.
Cheers, Roddy.

Extract below (not my words!):

Two types of steering columns are fitted to Land Rovers!

Land Rover owners like to confuse the steering wheel boss selection we know what fits what.

36 Spline & 48 Spline explained

ALL 90/110/127 models from 1984 to 1989 had a 4 spoke that's a four spoke steering wheel that fits 36 splined steering column.

1989 to 1991 Defender 200Tdi/V8 had a 4 spoke steering wheel that fits 36 splined steering column.

with us so far

1992 to May 1994 Defender 200 Tdi

200 Tdi Defenders in 1992 started to appear with the 2 spoke steering wheel 48 spline

May 1994 to 1998 300 Tdi

Nice and easy all have a 48 splines

1998 to 2006 Td5

36 or 48 spline?

This is where people come unstuck, its not hard look at the large round thing in front of you when you sit in your Land Rover.

Land Rover kept changing the steering column depending how much money was in your wallet.

Basic bog/poor/poverty standard 1998 to 2006 Defenders came with 2 spoke steering wheel with a large plastic Land Rover logo in the middle, this is a 48 splined column.

Now for the posh people

Proper County (that's carpet under your feet) & Special editions from 1998 to 2006 came with a 2 spoke steering wheel that has a large padded centre section looks like an airbag module but is not, this is 36 splined.
These should be all County XS, Heritage, Silver edition, Black edition, X-tech, G4 Challenge etc.

2006 saw the introduction of the Puma/Tdci Transit engine this is where we say check your column as Land Rover started to use up all the old columns so some have 36 some have 48.

Generally 36 splines are confined to 2007 model year cars, there are not many but they need to be checked.

Most later Puma engined Defenders should now be on 48 splines regardless of the steering wheel fitted.

This is not the end Land Rover thought it would be a good idea to fit a steering angle sensor to 2015 model year Defenders!

This boss does not fit 2015 model year cars.

Up for sale here is 48 spline RDX SLIMLINE boss if it does not fit your Land Rover then you have a nice paper weight or you can return to us within 7 days at your cost plus £10 with nice letter stating you bought the wrong boss because you did not read the listing. We will then send you a 36 spline Boss and if that does not fit then you have a very nice paper weight, there are only two types fitted to Land Rover 90/110 Defender models!

This obviously only works if your Land Rover is original, if you have one of those early pre production 1986 Td5 models or a rebuilt motor you will need to check your column!

It evens cancels the indicators
- This only works if your stalks are not damaged. If it is damaged the black plastic collar with a screw will be snapped. This results in the stalks moving so the blue cancel ring does not contact with the stalk at the correct point.
