Check the earth from dash to chassis/battery. My mates 200tdi always showed hot on the gauge and he let it worry him for ages. Once we fitted a new earth it ran rock steady midway on the needle. It turns out the gauge wiring was acting as a partial earth substitute.

there are lots of temp senders that have the same thread/fitting etc , but the temp sending info is different so its possible to fit wrong sender in the same hole easily
normally the coloured plastic band round the top by the terminal is way you tell them apart , might be worth checking one with a different colour band can make temp gauge read high or low have you had actual running temp checked just in case another thought , have you fitted a temp sender for a 200tdi or a 2.5td ( 200tdi for engine age , 2.5td one for defender age ) might be worth seeing if the 200 / 2.5td are different ranges , but same fitting , maybe change to a 2.5td one to go with dash looking on ebay ( I know not 100% way of telling ) , there are white banded and black banded that look same fitting , might be a simple case of swapping senser to get right reading |

+1 on checking the earths. Common fault. I'm sure the last 200 swap I did I either used the gauge from a 200 or the temperature sender from the 19J. Can't quite remember which. I think Steve Parker does an adaptor for the temperature sender

It has to be earth, sender or thermostat as all 4 cylinder petrol and diesel and V8’s use the same temperature gauge up to MY 2002 part number AMR 2631 For those who like Welsh Mountains and narrow boats have a look at my videos and photos at..

Temp gauges are different between 19J and 200 I'm 100% certain mate. I'll drag the part number out later

There does appear to two Tranducers (senders) Coolant Temperature, for turbo engines
Part Number PRC 2505 to 19J25183C and PRC 6663 from From 19J25184C, if its any help. I'm sure microcat is wrong there. The early temp gauge which fits 2.5NA and 19J engines has a solid white area between cold and hot whereas the TDI one has increments on it if you like. I've got both kicking around here somewhere I'll try and find them and see which part numbers are on them.

No Microcat is not wrong.
This is where it gets really confusing, the temp gauge with the solid white bar was part number PRC 7311, this was superseded by PRC 3105, which has the smaller white and red segments but also division marking, this gauge was then superseded by AMR2631, which has the white and red smaller segments but without the division marking. However though their gauge dials look different their internal electrics are all much the same and all models are compatible with all 4 cylinder engine variants. The only real difference to make the gauge read accurately on 4 cylinder engine variants is the sender units and the later model providing you have the correct sender is suitable for all Defenders models up to TD5 when as we know the working of the temp gauge electrics became very different. It's over 12 months since we did this but I seem to remember running an earth from the bulkhead to a bolt I welded to the back face of the passenger side bulkhead outrigger, then another earth lead from the same bolt direct to the battery.
Belts and braces maybe but it was all done in heavy battery lead cable and made sure the vehicle was fully earthed. I didn't run a strap to the engine/gearbox assembly as that side of things started and ran well. |

Yeah when i recently had the engine out i cleaned up all the earths on the chassis in the engine bay tried finding my old (new ) winch earth cable that i never used but couldn't find it then the other day moving stuff to make room for my new bench i found it so was thinking of bolting it to the N/S foot well and to the chassis and see if it does anything Graham

Can anyone tell me what temperature they would expect to see for a 200tdi on the motorway?
I've fitted a Durite gauge for better accuracy and it seems to sit at 92degrees unless really pushing it or going up big hills at motorway speed when it will move up to 100 degrees (at which point I back off!). I think the radiator may be due for replacement but wanted to see what people thought. Cheers 1990 Defender 110 200TDI Camper - now converted to Td5 power |

Thats really quite interesting as I have the Solid bar type gauge.
Seems to read about middle on motorways but on long hills it likes to climb up a bit, in which case as you say, just ease off a bit.
