Pick up tailgate wheel carrier

Has anyone actually tried to fit a standard spare wheel carrier on a tailgate in a soft top pickup.
I have the bracket and also use the side hung conversion kit for the tailgate so it also opens from the side but , I'm guessing it's going to be heavy but with care can you see an issue ?
Must be a way of beefing up the tailgate to do this, if anyone has tried and succeeded or failed let me know
