IIRC it is 96K for the belt (alternator and water pump etc., the timing has a chain). However, the tensioner bearing could be in for replacement earlier if it is squeaky. Cheers, Vincent

If its every 96k then I am only 12k off having it done (assuming it was done at 96k)
If I am doing the tensioner then I may as well get the belt done as well. 1999 Defender TD5 110 Regards John M0VAZ Econet Station 48 no clock |

Easy job to do yourself... 15mm with a flexi head ratchet is the best to push the tensioner away to free the belt! Then either 13/14mm (sorry done twice recently but can't remember) to remove the tensioner itself. Defender 90 TD5 County -

Ordered the bits (thanks Dan) and when the arrive next week time to look at the belt.
From what I have read and seen, the tensioner is down on the drivers side by the Alternator? So reading Ken B's post, all I need to do is push the tensioner away from the belt, then pop the belt off. Release the tensioner and then remove the old belt (noting the fitment over the pulleys) Replace the tensionser and mount and then torque up. Push tensioner back in, and hook the belt over? 1999 Defender TD5 110 Regards John M0VAZ Econet Station 48 no clock |

Hi excossack
I got my mate to help when I did mine as holding the pulley away and trying to get belt off then new one on is a pig!! As for the frequency I think it is every 8 years or 96k if you average 12k per year. good luck tommo |

I swapped my altenator out last week, again same process the Flexi head ratchet makes it easier and can be done as a one man job but a extra set of hands would make it something that can be done with eyes shut. Just had my belt, both idlers, tensioner, water pump, power steering pump and bottom pully done last week because the bottom pully was failing and figured while the front was off might aswell do everything as she's done 114k now. Also replaced radiator, intercooler and had silicone hoses fitted at the same time because I like the belt and braces approach Ray

Replaced the drive belt, tensioner and idler pulley. Not a bad job (needed assistance from Mrs Excossack to slip the belt on while I held the tensioner back.
What I forgot though was...there are two idler pulleys so only replaced one of them. So now need to go through the whole thing again and replaced the idler pulley closest to the cylinder head. I could feel movement in the tensioner pulley and could hear whirring noises in the the idle pulley I replaced. So all in all a good move I think. Dan @ duckworths standby your phone tomorrow! 1999 Defender TD5 110 Regards John M0VAZ Econet Station 48 no clock |
