Soldering Iron choice...
Hello fellow D2ers... Thumbs Up

I broke an aerial connection today and now need a soldering iron (have been putting it off a while now!)... Whistle

Having searched here I have not found any direct references to choosing the kit itself, although I did find an older thread with a couple of references to a couple of products... Wink

So, what do you think of this as a good choice for a first soldering kit... Question

Thank you much for any advice/guidance/pointers... Bow down

Hi Rog,

I use a Weller kit. Nevertheless I have an unused Iroda 120K kit you can have for £33 delivered if you wish. Let me know.

portasol are pretty good , same make as snap on ones

gas good for site work and 1 or 2 wires but get too hot after doing a few wires and flux in solder burns and you get dodgy joint , electric better for bench work and if you got a few wires to do

+1 on the portasol. On my 3rd one now (worn 2 out over the years) brilliant bits of kit

Just one point of view - do you need a gas powered, nice for field use, not the best for precision use, or something powered from mains? For occasional use, Weller or Hakko or some cheap Chinese Ayoue will be good. Just look for 50W or more output and get 3 different solder tips - a sharp one for small parts, a 1mm wide screwdriver one for normal work and a thick one for heavier work. "Drobek" = The Small One - Discovery 2, "Blufínek" = The Blue Thing - Defender 130, and for me at least Ford Mondeo Smile

Sold to the 'Green Man.' Sorry Brian. Would have liked to discover how you can possibly use two at once though. Wink If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!

The gas ones are fine for working away from the mains but mine has bitten me a couple of times! You get so engrossed feeding the solder in and as your fingers holding the solder get closer to the soldering gun you are apt to forget the side flame out of the gun Whistle

Love my dremel gas iron. Good for using the scraping/cutting and blowtorch tools as well for out in the field. Otherwise first choice for mains kit would be Antex and second would be Weller. North Cumbria Search and Rescue - Team Leader

Must be said my Weller has given me excellent service and been dropped in some horrendous places and continues to function and serve me well. No gas ones are any good whatsoever outside on the roof of one of these with any slight breeze in an attempt to solder an antenna connector though.
